Hi,
If you can buy a slightly used 10D for $849 and a brand new Rebel XT for $839, which one would you choose? We are talking body only here.

Trying to make this decision right now for the wife who I would like to buy a camera for so she can learn how to shoot. Any advise you can give me is appreciated. Thanks.

Tough choice. A 10D has better build quality and the dial on the back, which would make it easier to use once you get good with it. The XT is brand new, with a warranty, has slightly better resolution, ETTL II, and is a lot faster to use. For a beginner i'd have to think the advantages of speed and warranty outweigh the dial on the back of the 10D, that's what i'd buy my girlfriend if she wanted a first SLR.

What does the 10D come with? at that price, you should be getting extra stuff. If it's body only, its tough, but the 10D is built better.

Tim, thanks for the advise, it helped a lot.
Grego, the 10D price is body only, B&H rated the item condition a 10, which is probably why they priced it as such. Is it too much to pay for a used 10D body?

All in all, I don't think we could go wrong either way. The new features that comes with the Rebel XT sounds tempting even though the built quality is not as good as the 10D

Decisions...decisions...

Well, are they giving you any warranty offers or anything? It's still a pretty good price though.

I haven't read much about the XT, but i've seen the Rebel at work. The 10D feels better, and especially if you add the battery grip.

The only advantages I can think of off the top of my head for the XT are resolution and the arrow buttons on the back(when looking at photos you took already once you are zoomed in). The ISO for the 10D goes all the way up to 3200 compared to the XT's 1600.

Obviously, Canon purposely takes away a few things from the XT, so that people dont' just settle on that and not buy the 20D(the successor to the 10D).

I have the 10D, and would say it gives you a lot for what you would get it for. Ultimately the lens will make or break it.

For a woman's hands, I think the XT is a perfect fit.

I used to think that an 8 megapixel sensor was not much of an improvement over a 6 megapixel sensor. Then I got my 20D, and my attitude changed.

EF-s lenses choices are almost a no-brainer (IMHO) when you don't have money to buy some FF lens (sure you can't compare a 17-40L and a kit lens, but if budget is an issue you won't buy an L lens that soon). Also, you don't know anything about 10D's shutter usage.
I'd buy a *new* XT. If I could ;)

Thanks for all the response. I never even thought about the shutter count on the 10D. I'm sure there is a way to find out, but I'm not gonna bother. I went ahead and purchased the Rebel XT for the wife. She'll be happy with that, it will replace the slow P&S camera that she currently uses. Plus, she will now inherit the EF-S 18-55mm lens that I got when I purchased my 20D, and the 70-200 f4.

Now I gotta go and order me another one of them POTN strap.:)

I feel a lot of love coming on;)

Yes, that is too much for a used 10D. If you trust the buyer though, I'd be more inclined to get the 10D. I just talked my neighbor into getting the XT, and I played with it a little today. It is a very cool camera. For someone starting out or wanting to make the jump to dslr, I would highly recommend it. However, I would get the 10D for myself. In fact, I recently did. I had enough extra $$ to get a 2nd 10D body, or the XT or the 20D. I chose to buy another 10D body and use the rest of the $$ to buy more memory and another flash.

Not only the dial on the back, but several of the menu options and the way that items are selected pushed me away from the XT. It is an awesome little unit though and will no doubt produce images as good or better than a 10D or 20D in the right hands.

Okay, so I just got the Rebel XT. My first impression is, oh my goodness, this camera is small! Compared to my 20D with grip, this thing is tiny. This will be perfect for my wife's small hands. But I will definitely have to get this a grip. My wife is going to absolutely love this.

Thanks to everyone for your advise. I really appreciate it.

$850 for a used 10D is too much. I got my lightly used 10D, with extras off ebay for $650.

I say XT, its an amazing camera. Dont listen to anyone about size, try it out first.
