Since you rarely hear about either of these lenses, I was wondering what opinions all of you can offer regarding these two lenses. Specifically how sharp and useful they are for landscapes, and how they compare to the Canon 17-40 and 16-35.

Tokina 19-35/3.5-4.5

Tamron SP AF17-35MM F/2.8-4 Di LD Aspherical (IF)

Check out the revoews at www.fredmiranda.com. The Tamron WA zoom has had great reviews, especially with its low price vis a vis Canon 17-40 or 16-35. I may get it later, however there is the Tokina 12-24. Ehich I may get when I NEED a super WA zoom.

Had the Tokina 19-35 when I first purchased my 10D but have replaced it with the Canon 17-40 f4 L. The Tokina was a great budget wide angle but don't expect miracles from it. I would pick the Tamron 17-35 Di over the Tokina as it is a much better lens (The Tamron 19-35 is in the same class as the Tokina) and has very good reviews from users on various forums. I was looking at geting the Tamron but went for the Canon L.

The guy I buy from does wedding photography on the side and he swears by the Tamron as a budget altermative to the 16-35L. he even recommended it over the 17-40L because he claims it is just as sharp and you get the extra stop at the wide end. I haven't experienced them yet, myself, but that's what I was told.

the tamron costs 3x more than the tokina so the tokina is definitely the bargain.

i now own only the tamron as it is of course a better lens.

....pic with tamron in very bright sun and cheap UV filter.

Tom, how would you rate your Tamron 28-75 against your 17-40L at the same focal ranges (28-40mm). I have a tamron (and love it) but have a wedding in Sept where I will need to do a big (over 200 people) group shot from a balcony and thought that the tamron would be too narrow. Also the normal formals where there may be 10-15 people?

thanks, A.

antaine,

I would rate the Tamron 7.5 nearly 8 for sharpness compared to the Canon (If I was giving the Canon a 10/10). The color is very good, but the AF is slow compared to Canon's USM (this is not a issue for people shots) and the Canon is a better build. Have you considered the Tamron 17-35 Di since you are happy with your 28-70 Di?
I can take some shots for you with both lenses at the same focal lengths, apertures with camera on tripod for you to compare if you like?
