A friend of mine who has no interest in photography gave me his father's Hasselblad 500 el/m with a distagon T* 40 mm (I know nothing about medium format but I think its a wide angle lens)

I heard a lot about Ziess lenses and I wonder if its possible to use this lens with my 20D? and if its possible does it worth it ?… is the quality of photos would be same quality of comparable Canon primes?

There are adaptors out there, but in all honestly all are a hassle. Even the Zeiss and other Russian glass are just the "poor man's" temporary fix in my eyes. Don't get me wrong, some are absolutely great lenses, but they have very minimal functionality on the Canon.

Most adaptors are cheap, so just grab one a mess around with the lens, if you already have the lens in your hands, I don't see a reason why not. To be honest, you could shell out a little more and get a nifty fifty for 60 bucks........."normal" primes are cheap anyway.

thanks for the reply....interesting name BTW (reminds me of "chapzy")

I found this adaptor:

80$ for a free Ziess 40 mm .... not bad !

hmmmm!

or should i sell the wholl thing (camera and lens ) and buy a nice canon L prime?!

the 40mm T* is an excellent lens for a hassy (true wide angle). can't see a lot of point using it on canon eos though. the canon lenses in this range are excellent. the carl zeiss 21mm distagon which all the fuss is about is from the discontinued contax slr range and is not a medium format lens.

i'm actually looking to get into medium format. if you'd consider selling, i've got a fairly complete range of eos lenses (from 15mm to 400 f2.8) and we could possibly work out a trade.

you have a nice friend :)

If THIS (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?ci=1&sb=ps&pn=1&sq=desc&InitialSearch=yes&O=SearchBar&A=search&Q=*&shs=hasselblad+distagon+40) is the lens you are talking about and you are not seriously thinking about picking up medium format photography, you might be better off with offering it for sale and spending the money on some nice Canon lenses.

That is, unless you fear that this might offend your friend who gave it to you .

Granted, it most likely is a great lens for the Hasselblad (it should be with a list price of 5000$ ), but a 40 mm f/4.0 lens will not really do much for you on a Canon DSLR. The 350$ Canon EF 50/1.4 or 35/2.0 will be more useful.

BTW, I don't agree at all with Persian-Rice's honoured opinion that using good manual focus lenses with an adapter on the Canon DSLR is 'a poor man's substitute' I have some nice (and very affordable) M42 lenses that give me great images if I take the time needed to make them work. Granted, a Canon AF lens is more convenient, but if you look at the final image, it can really be worth it.

Best regards,
Andy

don't get the man too excited. i very much doubt it is the latest (cfe model) version of the lens. if it is thats even better but the chances would be small. its more likely an older version such as http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=15248&item=7515423158&rd=1

still a nice lens but not quite the same price ;)

Agreed!

Sorry, I don't know much about hassy lenses (except that they are expensive :p ). It was the only one that Google and the search function at B+H came up with.

Still, with the money that the lens can be sold for on eBay, it should be possible to get a nice Sonnar 180/2.8, 300/4.0 and Flektogon 35/2.4 in Pentacon/M42 mount plus the corresponding adapter, if you like nice Zeiss lenses (CZJ, that is) :D
Alternatively, a single Canon EF prime (e.g. 50/1.4 or 85/1.8  )

Or, you could save the camera and lens for the wide angle picture that your 1.6 crop Canon will refuse to take

Best regards,
Andy

Agreed. Some manual focus lenses are in fact very expensive!

they do look in great condition! can't help with the printer but i do have a mint 17-40 f4L here ;)

i'm having a very hard time justifying getting into film as all my paid work is digital. guess you're allowed to do things for enjoyment occassionally though!

anyway, let me know if you're interested. my knowledge of hassies is limited so i don't know what those extra bits are in the photos sorry.

cheers
