Stayed up to get the volleyball done since the next two weeks in Minnesota are Wednesday night football for the most part.

It seems like 90% of the pictures I get with this girl in them.. the eyes are closed.. had a nice serve shot ruined by closed eyes tonight too.

Got lucky on one where she didn't blink as the ball came to her

I am amazed at how bright (and non-yellow) these are. More so, i am amazed how smooth these are at ISO 3200.

Compared to many of the volleyball I have shot, seen here on POTN and on flickr, these are very well done.

EDIT: I know have these up on my home monitors and they do have that yellow tint you get from gym lighting, but still not as harsh as most.

+1 to Vin's comments, these are great and having done a game this week, I'm even more impressed. Tough sport to shoot, especially if you don't have a clue whats supposed to be happening!

Between the community college and high school I've now seen 13 volleyball matches.. EVER.. I've never been able to get a good custom WB in our high school gym so I just use auto-WB there.. notice from the first and last picture the walls have alternating beige/yellow paint.. the background is always changing.. not to mention the net is almost never on the same horizon as the vent that goes around gym (the purple thing in the first/last pictures.)

The biggest help though is that all of our facilities.. the 2 gym's and the hockey arena have all switched to fluorescent bulbs that don't cycle, so it makes it that much easier than the college hockey stuff I've been experimenting with.

Seriously what gives, the paint is cheaper? What school has beige as the primary school color? Simply using white would seem to allow for greater reflectivity and probably slightly better lighting. Worst case, it looks WAY better than beige. What's next, shag carpet in the halls?

There's one gym in the area.. the walls are cinder-blocks and have never been painted.. talk about eating the light.

Posted last year, before the 50D and Neat Image Pro.. but just an example of the gym with drab walls

that looks good for those conditions. think of it this way, at least you have a built in gray card for a custom wb! I may have you beat anyway... local high school has dark wood (yep, that's right, wood circa 1977) on the walls at both ends and ceiling. Who puts that in a gym?

This is the last year for that school with the cinder block gym... Duluth (Minnesota) is going from 3 public schools to 2 in a hugely controversial and debated decision that wasn't voted on (I won't get into that, I'm not from Duluth) and this is the last athletic season for that school.. I gotta get my 50D in there and get some good shots before it goes away.
