Don't hold your breath.
I doubt that Canon is going to mess with this lens any time soon. They have many other lenses that can/should be refreshed first.

Easiest place to ask/check would probably be the rumor forum

It could use an update to try and match the IQ of the f/4 IS. Also, the IS could stand an upgrade. The 70-200 f/2.8 IS, along with the 24-70 f/2.8 are lenses that are a bit long in the tooth, and are used extensively to photograph weddings. New versions of these would sell like hotcakes.

Checks Todd's gear list... yep, as suspected. Current 70-200 2.8L IS owner.
:p
Seems a (terribly obvious when you think about it) pattern happening here. Everyone who WANTS this lens wants an update to be announced, everyone who OWNS this lens thinks there's no way Canon would update it.
Testament to it's quality and desirability both.
Personally I want this lens, but I don't want to buy it just for a new version to come up (too many rumours). Lucky (or unluckily) for me I don't have the money to buy it anymore...

My only nit to pick regarding my 70-200 is that I have to remember to never use it on the same shoot as my 300 f/2.8.
The 300 wide open makes the 70-200 wide open look like a 50mm f/1.8

I'm actually thinking about selling my white whale. I just don't shoot much past 100mm or so. I have my 135L which does nicely, and I just ordered a 1.4TC which will help for anything a bit longer and hopefully replace the 70-200 for me.
I wouldn't normally think of selling it, since it's a great lens, but I've got my eye on getting a new 24 TS-E II and I'll need the cash freed up from somewhere (and I already got rid of my 24-105, and there is no way I can get rid of my 16-35) so I think the 70-200 will be the sacrificial lamb in this case.

In my point of view, they MIGHT make a II version, but not anytime soon - just not yet..The'll let it stay like it is for at least 5-6 months.
Again, that's what I'm thinking.

Then again, I think they'll release it today...(announce it I mean).
This is why truth is not reliant on human minds. Just too unpredictable. ;)

I think they'll release it soon. I just bought the current 70-200 f2.8 IS, and I always buy things right before an update, at full price.

I think we may have to wait till the press conference in Australia (hopefully) that should be a few more hours.
Here's hoping.
I can't afford it right now, but it would be nice to know what I'm saving for.
If they don't seem to be going to release it by the time I can afford it, I'm just going to get the current one. Should be cheaper anyway and I can always sell it to get the new one (of course I'd rather just get the new one).
Arrgghh.. stoopid 1DIV.

I had the 200 2.8, but when I got the 135 f2, I put on the 1.4TC, and it sure was close. So I sold the 200... Just confirming your idea.

I'd have to agree. Oh well, I want to have enough money so that when it is announced I can go pre-order at a shop that same day and know I have enough to pay for it when it comes. So perhaps this is a good thing.
That said, I'm pretty surprised they didn't announce any lenses with this camera. You'd think they'd have some sort of telephoto lens announced seeing at the 1DIV seems aimed at the telephoto-weilding-sports-photographer...
