I have decided to purchase a small P&S that I can literally carry with me everywhere. I want a small camera that I can stick in a pocket and have with me at every moment.

That is my only requirement, extreme portability. I want the best P&S that Canon makes that fits that bill. For those of you that use them and know them, please give me some advice...

I use the SD line as my pocket camera. I have had the SD400 for going on 5 years now and taken over 10k pics with it. I know a lot of people swear by the G9 and now the G10, but those were to big for my definition of pocket camera.

S90's starting to sound really attractive for that . . .

It does look quite nice. Have you tried it out yet? I haven't made it over to the store to test one out. I'm just having trouble swallowing the $430 price tag

I'm not looking to replace any of my P&S models right now. If I could ever convince my wife to make more use of her camera, it might be a worth-while upgrade for us, but the A630 and SX-1 are plenty for now. I have RAW with the SX-1 and the A630 gets used mostly as a "digital notebook".

I'm loving my s90. BB has 10% off coupons which are easy to find and canon has the $20 rebate right now as well... So it ends up being ~$400 after tax (if you have it).

I really like my SD800IS, bought it used at a great price a few months back. I use it mostly for carry around, but also have a DicaPac underwater pouch for it and it has been great so far.

yes, the SD series is your best bet. i still use my SD10 (6 years old!) as a backup and for underwater and video.

i have the S90, a great camera but not quite a "stick in pocket" carry anywhere, as the lens bulge and weight can be a factor if you're looking for something really small and light. and it's expensive. i can jam the S90 into my jeans pocket if i wanted but prefer to have it in a case. the SD cameras are similar in size and weight to a cell phone.

Ooo pick me! Pick me! I just went through this. Ended up with the Canon SD1200 and I'm loving it. I take it every where. It even fits in my little change wallet :) Here's a little bit with it (http://kjaphotos.blogspot.com/2009/09/gadget-goodness-my-new-baby-camera.html) and you can see more on my personal blog (http://www.kristinsnews.blogspot.com), if you want.

Kristin... That is one of my "Final Three". I have decided to go with the SD series, I am now debating between the SD1200, SD940, and SD780. Frankly, I am going to look for the best deal I can find and whichever one I find first, is the one I will probably go with.

On another note... I looked through your blog. What boots did you buy that keep your feet so dry?! I am curious because a good pair of boots is also on my short list of things I need soon. As much rain as we've been getting, I have discovered my hiking boots are good for about 2 hours in the muddy, wet grass. Any more than that and my feet are wet, and I don't think I could stand in a stream and keep dry for more than 2 or 3 minutes.

Any boots with the Gore-Tex lining are a good start. I also spray mine with "water-proofer" to help out.

If you want ultimate wetness protection, go with straight up rain boots/gloshes. Also many hunting boots are made waterproof for duck hunting and such. Places like Bass Pro Shop or Dicks or Gander Mountain.

If you're looking for something *tiny*, the S90 is not it. If you're looking for a camera that delivers solid results in fully automatic mode, the S90 may be overkill.

That being said, if you're looking for a pocketable camera capable of delivering solid images and prefer to shoot manual, I think the S90 is a great tool... which is why I bought one to replace (albeit sadly) my beloved S3 IS and A610.

Yeah, I looked at he S90, and I am very tempted... But that said, I will be that 90% of the time I will just be shooting in Auto Mode anyway. If I am going to shoot something where I need to be able to have full control, I'll just bring one of my 20Ds.

I am really looking for a true point and shoot. Something I can carry in a shirt pocket, turn on and click a photo. Or hand to a stranger and say, "Just look at the back and push the button."

S90 is pretty small for me...it may be overkill, but I don't worry about wanting another camera in 6 months.

My boots are an Aussie company and I love them! Not sure that will help you :)

Cabelas is also a great place to find waterproof boots, just check out the hunting section.

I'm sure you'll like whichever SD camera you end up with. I'm having a great time with mine and I'm actually shooting ISO800 way more than I thought I would.

I have several A series as well but there's just no way I'd lug something like that around all the time. For me size was paramount and the SD1200 was the winner for size and quality of images cross a range of ISOs for my needs. And I love the green :D

Sd780 gets my vote if portability is the only issue here. It's the smallest camera Canon makes. Pictures are decent but not great, and the HD video is awesome.

I looked at the SD780 before going with the SD1200 and the 1200 did get better nods for image quality. I don't care at all if my camera has any video, much less HD so that wasn't an issue. If it WAS an issue, then the SD780 would be the one I would have chosen. And the sizes are so close it made no nevermind. The SD1200 is actually lighter by 40g (just over an ounce) :)
SD780
Weight (inc. batteries) 160 g (5.6 oz) Dimensions 87 x 56 x 18 mm (3.4 x 2.2 x 0.7 in)
SD1200
Weight (inc. batteries) 120 g (4.2 oz) Dimensions 86 x 55 x 22 mm (3.4 x 2.2 x 0.9 in)

I've loved most of the SDs I've played with so I don't think you can go too wrong as long as your expectations are realistic!

True...this is true, but depending what you are going to do with it, its better than carrying an SLR.

Well, after a ton of research for my own pocket cam, I would suggest the Panasonic ZS3.
