It tells you on the update page what it fixes. If you don't want to update, you don't have to.

My 350D is running 1.01 without any of the 'phenomenons' reported, makes you wonder if it's a body fault they're compensating for. To upgrade or not, well if you're experiencing any of the listed problems then the firmware upgrade would be feasble, if not then I'd stick with the shipped firmware.

I have problems with the odd white balance while using an external flash (420EX) so I'm considering the upgrade. But I'm scared something will go wrong and I won't have enough time to get it fixed when I need the camera on july 9th. But I *do* need a correct white balance when shooting that day, so it'll be a gamble.
I'm going to hold off a few days and see if people reports any camera malfunctions due to the update, then I'll probably take the leap.

you are definately stuck between a rock and a hard spot. I would be pretty afraid upgrading the firmware myself. Good luck with it.

I did not had any of the issues, at least until now but maybe I could have had the underxposure problem while I am getting new lenses, so I gave it a try and upgraded. Very easy and fast, and as of now, no problems. Tomorrow I will have a long shooting session and we'll see...

Cyberpet, the question now is, would the WB have bothered you have you not known? :)

Johan, it has bothered me and I was annoyed about it. Actually was thinking of putting a filter on my omnibounce and lightsphere to "cool down" the colors. So yes, it was a problem and I was happy to read that it was a "bug" and not just me - a moron behind the viewfinder.

Could you not have 'cooled down' the images with the 350's built in WB correction algoritm? Or does the hardware actually do it better?

poolstok, probably could have set a custom white balance or something.... but the setting for flash didn't seem to do much difference from awb. Well.... I'll see if I dare to take the leap next week, when more reports come in on updates.

If it installed successfully, you are fine. Next time you should take the lens off, to avoid the possiblity of the camera having a software problem while you are flashing it...
The way firmwares generally work is they are an all or nothing deal (meaning, it'll either say successful, or it'll let you know it went wrong). When they create a firmware, they make a "checksum". After the flash, they calculate the checksum from your camera and compare with the known value. If it has a match, it's successful, otherwise it'll complain loudly.
Canon asks you to keep the lens unplugged during the update to prevent any possible failure. As a programmer who has to deal with updating an embedded system that is in the hands of a customer, I understand why they do this...

You could flash back to the old one if you don't like the new one?
Man, I did so many motherboard firmware updates on the PCs I built, the first thing I could think of when someone says firmware update is---Where is my floppy?

seems like doing the custom white balance should be the best workaround for this problem. i mean, if the camera is choosing an inappropriate white balance, keep it from making any choice at all.
please let us know what your results are. i am almost always happier with the results when i do a custom white balance than if i choose what seems to be the "appropriate" white balance setting.

If you shoot raw the WB shouldn't be a problem.

Well, I've done the update now and it's a lot better than before when using the external flash. The white balance hit closer to the target in AWB compared to if I used the set for flash. I didn't do the custom wb setting, since I think it hit the mark a lot better now. Instead of incredible yellow they are now a bit more red, but a quick "Auto color" actually hit the mark all the time (tried on both my cats and my husband and mother and some printed items).
Actually, I think the AWB is getting closer to the mark now than before, even without a flash. So the update was a good thing for me, and it went without a glitch (I was sooo careful with all the steps in the procedure and even remember to remove the lens).
So, one more happy customer here! :)

Hello, I also upgraded the firmware without any problems, and took over 200 pictures without a problem.
