I'm new to the dSLR world, and have a 350d with the standard kit lens.

As I've been looking for additional lenses (I'd like something with more zoom like a 50 to 200ish) I've seen Sigma versions that are about 1/2 the cost of the Canon ones.

Any opinions on the relative value vs. performance of the Sigma brand lens. Especially for a new user who's mostly taking shots of family, kids sporting events?

thx,

Daryl

I was in a very similar situation to you around Christmas time. I ended up going for the Sigma 70-200 APO HSM f2.8 lense as I found to be the best I could afford and was almost as good as they Canon L version for around a third of the price. I am very please with it and can heartily recommend it to you.

You might also consider the Canon 70-200 L f4 though if you don't need the extra aperture of the Sigma.

Hope that helps a bit

I've been happy with the SIgma's I've had (5 so far) and only one problem, that with a new 80-400 OS, but got a refund and bought another Sigma, the 100-300 f4 which is superb. Price to performance ratio of their best lenses is better than the equivelent Canon's in my view. Go for the EX series. I just got a Sigma 105mm f2.8 Macro which is absolutely knock out :D

I have the Sigma 55-200mm f4-5.6, it's a great lens... works like a charm and was pretty cheap!

I had a Sigma 75-300 APO for 15 years - fantastic lens!
