I am by no means qualified to give you a legitimate review on this lens as I am pretty new to photography. That said, I took a couple of pictures with my new 18-135, and tried to replicate a few of the pictures with the 18-55 IS T1i kit lens for comparison. I will post them side by side with the settings and am eager to hear your opinion.

No one can tell much of anything from web-sized images, unless it's a terrible lens.
Bokeh looks promising, though.

So, let's see... The lens just arrived, you fixed yourself a drink and are happily taking photos out the window with it, right? ;)
Looks pretty good. I wonder if the plan is for it to replace the 28-135. Canon has been stuffing those into kits for a couple years now, like they had a huge stockpile somewhere.
Can you please look at the instructions that came with the lens and let us know if it says that IS must be shut off if the lens is used on a tripod? I suspect not, but am curious if it's like the 28-135 in that respect.

Yes, don't rely on the camera's internal meter at all, or any of the camera's auto exposure modes.
Instead use M mode and a separate incidence meter to set your exposure parameters (both shutter and aperture).
Alternatively, use either Av or Tv and dial in some + exposure compensation. How much will depend upon exactly how much of the white expanse is in each image, i.e. how much it will influence (as in "fool") the camera's internal meter into underexposing everything (not just the ice). Take some test shots. Check the histogram. With snow outside the general rule of thumb is between 1 full stop and 1.66 stops + exposure will usually get you in the ball park. It's a little harder to guesstimate under artificial lighting. I'd start around +1 and see how that works.
An incidence meter is more accurate, faster and easier, IMO.
Depending upon the lights, it might be good to set a custom white balance, too... or shoot RAW and tweak white balance later in post processing.

Set EC to +2/3 would probably do the trick along with manual white balance.

I think the pictures with your new lens look good. I'm not sure if there is some barrel distortion in the first photo of the skyline, but otherwise, I don't see anything to complain about.
Remember that much of the commentary about lenses on this site involves people looking at huge blow-ups of images (much larger than they would ever print or view pictures). At these large magnifications, the relatively small differences in sharpness betweeh lenses look more important than they are in reality.
Also, other lens characteristics that are more important, such as barrel or pincushion distortion, or chromatic aberration (where different colors fail to focus at the same point), often get less attention than the maximum resolution that a lens can produce when photographing a black and white test chart.
While I don't plan to buy the new 18-135, my impression is that it will work well for those who want a single lens that can cover a large range of focal lengths.

I can see your point and agree that the three lenses you suggest give good value for money.
I guess I should have qualified my personal praise of the 18-135mm with the fact it is a great travel lens covering a good range. It also aleviates the need to change lenses regularly, possibly missing the odd shot in the process and adding the risk of dust getting on to the camera's sensor.

I was worried about this lens after reading the photozone smackdown on it but after seeing the goods on this forum I got one and boy, am I glad I did! I'd say its IQ is on par with my 18-55 kit lens (which is pretty good), and its focal length range is perfect.

I was worried about this lens after reading the photozone smackdown
After reading a couple of other (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-S-18-135mm-f-3.5-5.6-IS-Lens-Review.aspx) reviews (http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/reviews/canon_ef-s_18-135is_review.html), I have to conclude that the Photozone review is unfair, especially with regard to the barrel distortion complaint at 18 mm. (It's a freaking super-zoom... even the 15-85 mm exhibits a lot of barrel distortion).
The truth is that this is a halfway decent walk-around lens that is a half step up from a kit lens. I got one for $250 with my 7D, as I didn't have anything else in the wide-angle/short telephoto range (I was a Nikon guy up until recently). There's no way that it's worth the $400 that it typically sells for, but $250 is a good deal for this lens. Most of the distortion and CA are limited to the edges, and it focuses very quickly and accurately. My biggest complaints are the overly-plastic build and the focus ring rotation during AF (a stray grip could damage the AF motor). But, again, it's a half step up from a kit lens. I'll probably sell this lens sometime next year (heck, I might even make a small profit) and purchase the 15-85. But so far I've been pleasantly surprised with the quality, given what I paid.
I haven't used it all that much, but here are a couple of samples. All were shot with a 7D...

It's a great all around lens, travel lens, nothing wrong with it. It all depends what you were looking for. It's definetely not the sharpest and best IQ but it's slightly better or equal to the 18-55mm and the 18-200mm.
If you don't need the additional range and are ready to spend more, the 15-85mm offer better IQ and USM... You can check some image comparisons of the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM, Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens on Digital-Picture.com (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/reviews/Canon-EF-S-15-85mm-f-3.5-5.6-IS-USM-Lens-Comparisons.aspx).
I was looking into getting the 15-85mm myself but after getting a really nice deal on the 7D with the 18-135mm, I decided to replace my XSI/18-55mm and temporarily ditch my plan to get the 15-85mm.

Thanks. The 15-85 is the one I wanted, but I couldn't justify the price for the relative quality. I know it is a good lens, but it isn't an L and has mixed reviews, so paying over £500 seemed silly.
I got a good deal on the 18-135 so will see how I get on with it, as I really wanted this lens before I read the reviews. Hopefully I will get good results with it. Some of the photos on here look great.
I checked out that link, but I guess until I start playing with it, I wont know for sure. The proof is in the pudding as they say.
I'm getting the nifty fifty for xmas and my dad is selling me his 100mm Macro 2.8 cheap that he never uses, so I should be covered for most situations.
Cheers and looking forward to seeing some more pics. I'll try and get some up at some point too...so I better unbox the body and lens!

Hi Pisces With Camera,
Thanks a lot for visiting my Flickr stream. I was surprised with the IQ I got from this "kit" lens. I was very hesitant to get this after reading a lot of reviews on the net. I was debating on going with the 28-135 or this, to be an all-around lens for my 7D. So, I rented the 28-135 and was not that impressed with the IQ I got.
I decided to gamble with this lens simply because of the reach I could get with this lens from 18-135. 28mm is not wide enough for me considering the 1.6 crop factor if I would get the 28-135. And find the 18-135's AF is fast enough for me.
I cannot really say if I was just lucky with my copy since I haven't really tried another copy of this lens. But for the price I paid for this lens, I cannot complain. :)
Again, Thanks! And Happy Shooting!

Thanks for all the pics in this thread..josh yours are especially good..
i really think the reviews killed this lens dead. before it could get out on the street and actually take any decent amount of pictures people already dismissed it...
for this zoom level most of the reviews agree the sigma 18-125 is a slightly better choice as far as IQ is concerned..so i was debating on whether to get this or the sigma...or pass like most people seem to be doing

Kamehame Ridge (http://happyhoveys.blogspot.com/2011/02/kamehameha-ridge.html), in Hawaii Kai. Short walk up a old paved road (it's Kamehameha school property, but everyone goes up there), just about a mile or so.
There is an old nike missle site and some FAA stuff up there (as well as a troubled teen camp). More here (http://owwdeeshilife.blogspot.com/2010/04/kamehame-ridge-trail.html)and here (http://www.panoramio.com/photo/6991645). Just park at the end of the Kamehame Drive and walk past the gate and up the road (you will have to go around another gate up near the top). Fun to explore. Some old buildings and the launching point for hang gliders is up there, too.

It's always nice to see Hawaii people on POTN :) I thought it was Hawaii I could tell by the vegetation and the lichens on the rock. Hawaii is a great place for photography, I myself really need to get out more and take more pictures.

So what's the problem with this lens? Do we think some of the early reviewers just had a bad copy? Or they're too picky? I see some very good pics in this thread.
I'm thinking of moving up to the 60d from my Rebel Xsi, and I already have the 18-55mm + 55-250mm. It sounds like it's pretty similar in image quality. Even though I have the same range covered, having 18-135mm without having to switch (and I'd keep the 55-250 for longer range) seems like a nice thing. Since it's basically $250 in the kit, I was thinking about going with the kit. Good plan, or should I just stick with the 18-55 + 55-250 I have and go with the body only? It sounds like image quality may not be significantly better than what I have though (or could it even be worse?), so I'm not sure if it makes sense to spend $250 (minus whatever an 18-55 IS is worth) on having the range in a single lens.
At $250 though, it also sounds like I can probably recover that (or even make a few bucks) on ebay, if I decide I don't want it.

Personally I would choose the 18-135mm over the 18-55 primarily due to the range you get with one lens, plus with the sensor in the 60D, you have the ability to crop a lot, so if 135mm isnt far enough, you just crop. Personally, I would sell both your lenses and have the 18-135mm. But that depends on your style and type of photography.

I feel like the 18-55 isn't as good as a range unlike the 18-135 and I've been debating whether or not to buy the 18-55 again but after seeing the photos here, I don't feel like I'm making a wrong move with buying the 18-135, I hope to contribute to this thread soon.

I currently own a XSi with 18-55 and 55-250 but im planning to upgrade to the 60D if the IQ is on par as the 18-55 (which has been great to me) i'd be willing to buy the kit and sell the 18-55 with the XSI since it has more range its more convenient....

I like the eyes/ floor...happy coincidence. This cat was standing in a shop doorway in Yuen Long, Hong Kong. Got this as a kit lens with 60D...was disappointed with its wide abilities in some night testing...but this one is sharp as can be...photobucket isn't doing it justice...anyway...

I seem to have some focus problems with this lens. Anyone else? And the focus problem seems to be when I'm near 18mm, it's saying it's in focus, but it's not! I'm starting to get frustrated with this lens, not sure what to do.
Maybe you already have your lens fixed by now, but thought to reply anyway.
I just got my lens adjusted by Canon service, it was front focusing all the time. Now it's good!

I did not know the lens even had bad reviews until after I owned it. I was actually shocked to see so many people saying it was not that great when I was very happy with the results. Here are a few shots from my recent trip to Washington, DC all shot with the 18-135 and my 60D.

I bought this as a white box lens from Adorama. I'd bought the 60D body early in the year, and later decided the 18-135 would be a useful and practical addition to my collection of lenses. I'm very pleased with it so far.

Have to say, after just an hour with the lens I'm impressed, I'll use it on my backup/bike kit (20D) initially it's much better than the reviews say....sharp, quick responsive AF, accurate, the range is great...Not sure what the fuss is all about...I paid $275 for mine, used here, with a hood and Hoya filter...Mine is much sharper at the long end than my 28-135 was....I'll post some pics as soon as I take some real shots.

So, it's been a couple days and really the only thing that's not so nice about this lens, in my opinion, is the max aperture. The IS works as advertised, the AF, while not USM, is quicker than I thought it'd be... and very accurate...... the lens is centered well and as sharp as any other zoom I've used. (My main setup is the 5DmkiI/24-70L and have used most all walkaround zoom lenses for the EOS mount)
In this price range you have a number of options, Tammy 17-50 non VR, Sigma 17-70 OS, and a few others, but none with this kind of range.(just wider aperture) And none come with Canon AF, which is almost always better than 3rd party glass.... I'm not worried about the aperture so much as i use this outside for hikes and bike rides.
Here's some examples of how great the zoom range is on my 20D, then some 100% crops.

This lens came as part of the kit on a 60d package and seems to perform well.

Bought 18-135 as a solution for when I didn't want a heavy bag full of Kit, I was expecting very mediocre performance, but its not bad at all.
Actually enjoying using it, just carry the camera with this lens on it, no extras to obsess over using like filters, tripods, strobes, loving taking photos instead of being a technician.
