This was taken on sunday at Marwell Zoo on a family day, Dad and brothers we all using Canon SLR's and little old me only had my olympus Mju400 compact (i know i know its a canon forum, sorry)
shot was taken with zero digital zoom, white balance set to sunny and the exposure brought down a full stop.

Original was taken at 2272 x 1704 however i have reduced the attached so that it is below 800pixels wide.
I look forward to reading your critique - and please not on choice of camera, all going well on ebay i will have an eos50 in a couple of days.

Ehehe... that penguin looks like he shaved a few hours ago!

It's a nice closeup. He looks slimy, which is a bit disgusting, but I like that.

There's something weird with the picture though... compression perhaps? squares and lines everywhere (on top of the eye, for example)

i am not seeing what you're seeing which is irritating, remember that the eye on a penguin is not perfectly round, you can actually see the iris as such, so the pupil is almost hexagonal.
see cropped out eye of original,
The slime i think was actually Brill Cream, he was very photogenic and a bit of a poser? or perhaps being a penguin it was just wet.

It's probably a compression thing from the resizing, since it does not appear in your crop from the original. Look closely... Anyway it doesn't matter since your original is okay.

would i have done better to have taken the whole penguin or focussed in closer? I don't normally take shots of wild/captivelife

Strange... now I can't see the lines I was referring to. Either the problem was at my end or I'm going nuts.

The image looks good. Good detail, amazing patterns, almost plastic like.

Sadly other than this posing chap the others were moving to bleedin' quick. managed to get some tortoises though!?

On the upside now have an SLR not the 50 i was after but a 1000, however it was free so beggars choosers and all that........ Looking forward to going out and playing with it.

Thanks for the nice comments though.
