Check out F-Stop Gear, http://www.fstopgear.com/, they offer excellent products geared toward those photographers that find themselves wondering off the beaten path. I have their new Satori backpack and it is the best adventure/hiking bag I have used. Check them out.

Check out the Fastpack 250, I believe it can carry a laptop of that size (as well as the 350)

I'm not exactly sure what those "3-4 lenses" consist of, but I love my Think Tank Hard Drive. It's got a pocket specifically for a laptop up to 17", my 1D2 w/ 24-70 attached, 70-200 2.8, and plenty of room to spread things out.

Put your laptop in the checked luggage and get the ThinkTank Rotation 360 (http://www.rotation360.com). You can access it without taking it off. Schlepping the laptop in a backpack makes it very heavy, and you should leave it in the hotel room.

The 360's definitely a great way to go if you don't ever plan on taking your laptop. Either way, I'd recommend anything Think Tank. It just sounds like he's going to be lugging around a whole bunch of stuff anyways, lol.
