First time I ever seen this in person. Glad I had my camera with me.

Those are great shots! However that doesn't stop me from wanting to find a shapely sledge hammer and begin securing the perimer of my own house in hopes that nothing like this is crawling around.

:) Being a committed arachniphobe I have to know what kind of spider that is and does it live near me in Humble Texas near the Gulf Coast.

Thanks for the comments. I have no idea what kind of spider it is. I took this picture in Daniel Boone National Forest, Kentucky. The picture doesn't give you an idea of size, but it was about 3 inches long. Before I took the picture there were a lot more babies on its back, but as I closed in some of them scattered. I agree with djdante, if this had been near my house the raid would have been pulled right after the shutter release. lol

Neat pics of a fascinating creature!

I found this great spider guide, and I think yours is a false funnel-web.

I think it is some type of wolf spider. The fangs aren't quite big enough to be a false funnel-web.

Nice shot but I don't think I would have gotten close enough to do it. If it had started crawling towards me that would of been it. I would have dropped the camera and catch you later, I am out of here! hehehehaha

Great shot teng! I have yet to see a mama spider with a bunch of babies on her back.
Thanks for sharing. ;)

I couldn't find any photos of one either, just read the bit about the way they carry their young on their back (which i seemed to recall from an Attenborough series)....and the part about there being 1000000 spiders per acre :-) !
