So I went back out for more HS volleyball. I went and set up two flashes- 430 ex and a Vivitar Auto Thyristor SMS 30. I put them in opposite corners pointed towards the net. Ill get better results next time when I set up my b800s in the same gym... anyway.

Here are the galleries from last night:

That's a huge gym compared to the ones I end up in.

lol... Honestly alot of the gyms in my area are this big.. not as high but they are just as big... something I will take a look at however is the fact that this was taken with a 16-35 too... so its alittle distorted ... you are seeing about 96% of the gym..

So they are pointed direct at the net, not bounced? I bounce off the ceiling.

The two flashes were directed at the net yes... Typically I would bounce but in this gym is is almost impossible with just regular flashes... plus I didnt want to shoot at full power the whole time.. I shot at 1/4th power which seemed strong as is...

Shadow of the net on #5 kind of diminish an otherwise good photo..

true but at least the lighting is still better than it would have been without..

Agreed. Sometimes you take what you can get. Looking at the last photo of the gym, it looks next to impossible to bounce off the ceiling to good effect. I have seen set-ups with the flash bounced off a baseline wall to diffuse the flash. Would that be possible here?

Dave, I'd love to hear your thoughts on opposite corner setup. I would have set them up opposite corners but the same side of the net so this is interesting.

Its an easy set up for when you cant bounce... gives good results and its interesting because having them in opposite corners adds almost like a hair light to your subject which makes the photos look a tad bit sharper. The only problem I encountered was the fact that you cant shoot into the two corners with the strobes... heres a good example why:

Granted both of those shots are un edited... I think I might be able to create something interesting out of them... but that is the main challenge i found. it does limit your shooting just a tad but I dont think I had a huge problem shooting with this set up.

Eh. its alittle iffy on that as well. You wont be able to do that with small flashes. That WILL NOT happen.. However with a good pair of studio strobes or something along those lines you should be able to. But the problem with a gym like this is the fact that they dont unload both sides of bleachers.. only one side ( if you look in photo 8 you can see the side with the side out- the side i was on was all stacked up and put away. They have a shelf above each set of bleachers.) So placement will probably be a problem. Ill have to work it out. But I dont think it will be a huge ordeal.

I'm not satisfied with the ambient results for the gym I shoot in so I have decided to use strobes. Working on buying a set of Bees, I'm currently using a set of Norman's with power pack and only 5" reflectors. Can I stop the slight ghosting though or will this be the best I can do?

Me either.

Dave, very nice results for a first go with that setup. I like the results with the cross lighting and had not really ever considered doing that. More power when you get it should really open up the possibilities for you.

I love strobed indoor sports. The skin tones look so much better. I am ready for basketball. Unlike the VB teams, they don't object to the strobes.

Again, nice job.

No idea why they are so against it around here but gave up that battle a couple of years ago. At least most of my local gyms have decent lighting so ambient works OK.

Time to get ready for some football.

Do I unerstand correctly that the lights are "kitty-cornner from each other? Or both on the same side/end of the court? Just trying to clarify for my own confussion.
Magic, nothing wrong with your photos, little no no ghosting that I can see either.
