View Full Version : Mix n' Match Questions: 1D Mark II Widest Angle & WTB 300mm f2.8?

What's the widest angle lens you can put on the 1D Mark II? I have a Nikon 12-24mm for my Fuji S2 but no zoom wider than the 16-35mm noted below for my 1DmII.

The other topic, I can't seem to find any of the more reputable online camera stores that have the 300mm f2.8 in stock. Is there something going on? I would have ordered one today from B&H but they are out of stock.

I'm not sure I understand your first question. I wasn't aware there was a limit on how wide you can go with a lens on a given body. If they make it and it fits, you should be able to use it. I'm using a Sigma 12-24 on my 1D MkII and a 14mm f/2.8L, so maybe that's not what you're asking.

I can't help on the other question, either. I got mine from B&H a couple months ago.

Well, I'm under the impression that the 1D Mark II will not accept EF-S lenses ... Am I confused (it would be no surprise!) Oh, and Bel, it's time to update your sig ... we all got our POTN straps on our cameras for heavens sake! :-)

That part is true, but it doesn't mean you can't use a wider lens as long as it has an EF mount. Beyon the two lenses I mentioned above, there's a Sigma 8mm fisheye, and that's about it.

So, I'm not nuts ... that's good. I may look into a fisheye for fun after I get few more long lenses. Hmmm, no takers on the availability of the 300mm f2.8. Perhaps just a lull in production ... I put myself on the 'Please Notify When Available' list at B&H. Anyway, thank you again, sir.

Good luck on that lens.

BTW, I'm driving up to San Jose this weekend, probably up 101. I'll wave as we pass through.

The Canon 15 mm fisheye (or the Sigma 15 mm fisheye) with de-fishing software supposedly provides the equivalent of a 12-mm rectlinear lens in terms of field of view.

rectlinear lens

Not sure you should be using that kind of language around here. :p

Bel, San Jose ... that's too bad! But you're right, you could wave to me from 101 as you pass Los Alamos. If you're ever inclined to make a pit stop here let me know and I'll give you a phone number and directions. We have NO stoplights or crime here. I will be post processing Steve Winwood, Deana Carter, Amy Dalley and BrittonJack live performance images as you sail past.

Tom, 15mm seems so BIG! :-) BTW, what's the three treasures?

The Canon 300mm f/2.8 (one of my wishes, desires and wants) is available here:

This is worth a read Dwight - http://luminous-landscape.com/reviews/imagealign.shtml - the fish is definitely a serious option.

I was going to reply, but I'm most certain that my statement would be taken the wrong way. ;)

MDJAK, yes, but Calumet's price is $100 more plus about $300 tax ... I'm gonna need to wait for B&H, sigh.

Gmen, interesting article ... I think the major post processing programs have perspective correction that would do most of the same things ... and $300 is quite pricey! But it makes me even more interested so I will need to add a fisheye to the end of my extensive list!

Uhhhhh.... non-efs, non fishy, the 14mm f/2.8L is the widest for your camera. I think.... o_O

so expensive though!

Whoa, I guess that puppy is expensive! And images from the 15mm fisheye are scrumptious for 1/3 the price. Hmm, I've got lots to consider.

sigma 12-24mm is the widest non-fisheye lens for full frame or 1.3x crop cameras. quite acceptable at 12mm if stopped down. (apparently, i haven't tried one. i have used the sigma 14mm f2.8 which was ok, but not stellar)

Neat, the sigma sounds like a useful lens and it's very reasonable ... for the most part, ultra wide angles aren't the best ... my Nikon 12-24mm is really bad wide open at the edges (outer quarter) and it was about $1100. This is a grand discussion. The links and searches on wide angle and fisheye were a very pleasant surprise as I rarely think about shooting this range.

Opinions on the Sigma 8mm fisheye? Is it 1DmII compatible?

Opinions on the Sigma 8mm fisheye? Is it 1DmII compatible?Yes, it's compatible. You will not get a complete circular 180 degree image on a 1D Mk II like you would on a full frame, though. It will crop a little from the top and bottom.

Pcas, does that mean I'll have to add a 1DsMII to my stable? :-)
