What do you use your 50 mm lens for?

It's very versatile. I just recently used it along with my XTI at my wife's deliver of our daughter. Gave us great pics.

Low light situations. Just recently I discovered that my f/4L zooms don't really cut it in dark lecture halls using available light. My <$150 50mm 1.8 allowed me to get the results that I needed.

My oppinion is that 50mm is better on full frame, or 35mm cameras. I borrowed a 30mm lens and it was just perfect for my 30D (what a 50mm is "suppose to" be like). I own a 85mm which is nice for extra reach. I still have a 50mm but i find it's an odd length and sits in the bag.

drmac,
Its my least used lens in my collection, but its still a keeper for shallow DOF and/or low light :)

Low light, and portaits (100mm equivalent on Olympus, 80mm equivalent on Canon), or sharp photos - it's a Zeiss... :D

Planning on using it on an old Rebel with BW film. :)

Odd length? That must be why nobody with a full frame camera uses any of those off the wall 85mm lenses...

Exactly. My zooms are all f/4 so having a 50/1.4 comes in real handy sometimes.

Low light - both indoors or outdoors.

The 50mm on a crop body actually has a pretty good range.. Definitely a worthwhile lens to have for $100.

I have used my 85mm on my ELAN and didn't care for it..

Shallow DOF shots mainly and a few portraits.

Looking to get the 85mm f/1.8, then it might stay in a cupboard.

Despite it's low picture quality compared to the L series... I still love it. I'm using the el-cheapo f/1.8. Taking portraits especially.

The 50 1.8 is no slouch in image quality and actually compares to some L series lenses. Most complaints of it being soft are either user error or a focusing issue (which mine does not have, mine's tack sharp). Where it lags is it's focusing motor and build quality.

I use mine for shallow DOF, low light, or if I need that focal length ;).
