So here's the deal:

I have had extensive use with video cameras, especially at school in the video production classes. So i am not a COMPLETE noob at video/photography production. I have recently showed a big interest in digital photography... looking through the pictures on this site has also inspired me.

My current digital camera is a Nikon Coolpix775 (i know i know they are Canon forums). This camera is nice, but it doesn't give me any flexibility or options. So, naturally i want to upgrade.

I am interested in a digital SLR, and after extensive research, i have decided upon Canon. Money is definately an issue, since i am only a highschooler...money is very limited. I have been looking into the digital rebel (300d), and have also tried it out. I fell in love with it :)...so many options and it takes beautiful photos. So my question is, will this be a good camera for me? Will i be limited? Is it worth going for the rebel xt? Keep in mind i am just a beginner. Since i am just starting out, i assume that this will provide plenty of options for my photos...

Would this be good purchase? Any input is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to POTN :)

The 300D would be a great first SLR, it's what I had. If you can afford the XT go for it, it has more controls (eg flash exposure compensation) and it's a LOT faster to use. Both cameras will take very nice pictures, the resolution difference isn't really important.

The 300D with the hacked firmware is a very good starter option. I did a transition from a semi point and shoot (it had control over aperture and not over time etc) and it has been truly incredible.

Whether you should get a 300 or a 350 or a 20D will ultimately depend on your interests and the timeframe of investment.

You can't go wrong starting with a Canon Digital Rebel. Yeah there are better digital models, but much of photography is the photographer, not the camera. That said, I moved from Minolta to Canon due to the choice of accessories, options, lenses, resale value, etc. etc.

If you've done your research you know that you aren't just buying a camera but rather buying into a system. You certainly can't go wrong with Canon - I've shot one for years in one form or other. I think the DRebel would make an excellent starter for someone interested in persuing photography. To someone who just wants quick snapshots for the family I would probably suggest a high end point and shoot. Sounds like you've been bit buy the bug (and it is a buy bug!) so go for it. Enjoy, and welcome to the forums. This is another place where you can't go too far wrong, lots of great help available here.

Hi taybone,
Welcome to the forum! http://initial-d.com/forums/images/smilies/hi.gif
I think 300D is a great start. I started with 300D and i'm loving it more and more everyday. In the states, it's about US$650 (after discount and savings) if you shop around. The money u save, u can invest in better lens.

Well thanks so much for the input, guys! I believe my decision is the 300d, and as time progresses, i will invest in lenses and the such. I can't wait to begin my new hobby!
