With several weeks of flashed football photography I think I am finally getting comfortable with it. I have been mounting my Canon 580 about 1.5' under my camera on the monopod and using a Canon battery pack with an off shoe cord. I am using a Canon 1DMIII with Sigma 120-300 f2.8 lens with the following settings: ETTL II on flash, ISO 800, 1/250 shutter speed and f2.8

Works well for band shots.

These look very good. What kind of pp?

I am going to try this set up with my new 7D and my 70-200L. I had the flash on a bracket above the camera and get so much red eye. Hopefully the change in flash location will eliminate that problem.

I shoot jpegs and run them through Lightroom doing minor adjustments and some cropping. I try to do as little as possible because I am usually in a hurry to get photos processed and posted.

Those are some good shots! What about increasing the ISO and shooting at 1/300 or even ISO1600 for 1/500 (with HSS)? I see some blurry feet in some of them!

Very nice shots. I'm sure there are probably numerous threads regarding this but why can't you shoot with the flash mounted on the camera? What is the benefit of mounting it below or higher??? Thanks.

With the 1DMarkIII the max sync speed is 1/300 but I like the exposure better at 250. I could use HS sync but it really does reduce the reach of the flash. I have not tried mounting the flash on the hot shoe because of the red eye problem that others have mentioned. Researching the different forums lead me to put together the set up I am using and for now I am pleased with it. That said I am always looking to improve my photography and reading these forums proves helpful. Thanks for the comments.

JPR I think Nicolas was being sarcastic. Very well done on these, great exposure.

How do you mount the flash to the monopod? I could see an advantage of it down there that it would open up the faces behind the cage. Thanks.

(great shots btw)

I wasn't, I just didn't know that HSS reduced the reach of the flash! :D

Here's a good little read about normal sync speed vs. HSS.

Very nice shots for evening FB. How did you mount the flash to the monopod? Did you create a custom mount of bought one?

You're welcome. I found it interesting as well. I thought that HSS would be more effective, too.

Here are some photos of my set up. I have made one minor change in that I now reverse the bracket and have the flash pointed down which allows the off shoe cord to be closer to the camera and the flashhead further away.

This is how I mount my flash to the monopod. It is a cheap $2 L bracket from Lowes with a hose clamp holding it to the shaft

You get really nasty red eye in your shots at longer distances with flash. The further you get the flash away from the lens, the less red-eye you have to deal with.

Tremendous shots JPR. Some of the better flashes football shots I've ever seen.

How far over ambient were you? The stands and field are really bright (not in a bad way, just looks like there's a lot of ambient).

I am generally looking for two to three stops. Usually ISO 800, 1/250, and f2.8 works out to about right on the fields I have shot on so far.
