Regularly photograph jewellery such as diamond and gem stone rings, brooches and pendants set in silver, gold or platinum, but find it hard to get the lighting right.

Use the 20D with 100mm macro lens and TRC 80N3 on tripod. Have experimented with different light sources, using a Lastolite silver or gold reflector, WB settings and other camera settings, but the images seem to fall short of those on retail web sites.

Would purchasing two small lamps such as the Kaiser clamp-on light be a good idea? These have a 21" (50cm) goose-neck arm, tiltable soft light reflector equipped with 11 watt, 6000 Kelvin compact flourescent light.

In addition (or alternatively), would a macro table or light tent really improve the images?

If you need any more details, please ask.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Marc.

Are you using multiple light sources simultaneiously? That would give the stones and settings more light sources to reflect? Try a star filter?
