"Microsoft has today announced native support for various RAW file formats in its next version of Windows, known as Longhorn. In addition the 'Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer' will also be available for Windows XP. "The explosion in popularity of digital photography on Windows continues to progress and evolve as consumers discover the quality benefits of digital camera RAW," said Amir Majidimehr, corporate vice president of Windows Digital Media at Microsoft. "By working with industry leaders to extend support for RAW in Windows, we are removing the obstacles for consumer use of RAW and enabling a seamless platform for the next era of digital imaging innovation." Thank's for the link, but...Ho, hum! Looks like they're looking for new ways to sell the need for another upgrade. Too little, too late, if anyone cares what I think.

I can't find a "bored" smily, so I'll have to settle for this one. On 2nd thought, maybe it's more appropriate. Picture me facing away from the West coast...

Thanks aam1234., I think that this is an important milestone because for such a large company to recognize the importance of the RAW format.

Whether or not you use or like Windows, this is important news. If anyone has the clout to nudge camera manufacturers toward a common standard, it's Microsoft. It would be nice if Microsoft adopts DNG in addition to the various proprietary RAW formats.

There will always be proprietary RAW formats because of advancement of sensors, quality, and for product support. Canon is now changing their RAW format with each new dSLR (low end at least) So that they can stop supporting their products after 5 years (minimum by USA federal law/statue).

You cannot look at RAW format the same as you do a word processing file.
