I'm not confident with regard to my ID for this bird. Any confirmation or other suggestions?

I'm pretty happy with this shot considering that there was very little light and I took it at iso3200 and 1/30 shutter speed with the 400/5.6L (on a monopod).

You have steady hands Jay! That's a great shot considering the tough condition. I'd need a tripod instead of monopod in that situation.:D

Really good shot !

There are a couple of similar woodpeckers, but this certainly looks like a yellow bellied sapsucker..

Nice shot. Was it the bird that put those holes in the tree?

larlen, cfcRebel, tupe, Stan, Jim and Steve ... thank you for the nice feedback.

Steve ... yes, the bird put the holes in the tree. He and another (his mate?) had worked over quite a few birches in the areaa.

Very nice work on this shot here Jay I have to agree with you on your ID also. This would have been nicer verticle but then you captured this shot nicely but as you mentioned it's a little tight in this orientation.

I like the shot a lot. Did you use some sort of noise reduction?

Eric ... wow, you dug this old thread out of oblivion. Thanks for commenting ... I agree that portrait orientation would have worked better here (I need to get more comfortable with rotating to that when I'm using the monopod).

Scott ... thanks for the nice compliment ... very meaningful coming from the original "Ninja Birder"!

Mark ... thanks ... and no, no noise reduction was applied. I was careful, however, in using a relatively high Threshold (4?) in the USM to limit sharpening of the noisy areas.
