This was an attempt to capture all of the detail in the tree root. 3 shoots taken and combined in Photomatix, then tweaked in Aperture.

Thanks guys, I got the idea for this after someone of Photosig suggest I concentrate on the details of the roots and try and remove some background.
I have now posted all of my other HDR shots from the same session on Flickr.

well done, but I find it hard to know what it is. If you hadn't told me, I would of guessed some part of a tree.

Very interesting, both the subject and how you handled the processing.
I find myself wanting more light into that crack on the left of center
to get a better look at that lichen pattern.

Really nice tone and depth in the first image, but it's a pity it falls out of focus
