i am just about to try and start a project for college and want to use painting with light for some still life shots.

i have tried using a 15sec exposure flicking my tourch on and off and spinning a laser pointer for effect but would like suggestions for different ways of painting with light.

any ideas or differnt ways of painting with light would greatly help

thanks

ha, great response.

but on serious note, glow sticks and flashlights are the best way to go that i know of.

maybe late, but use a flash and put it on first curtain, that way you can use people and other subjects in it

I used a penlight for this photo. Since it was taken in the dark and my hand was moving fast, my hand was not picked up in the photo. EXIF attached.

I recently just did a painting with light session in a dark room with about 15 glowsticks and my Canon S5 IS. The product turned out really well...

I tryed this as well a week ago, found best result was to setup in a dark room and then set the camer to blub with remote. Hit the remote for a few sec the i used LED torch once i finished i again waited a few seconds then finished the shot, result http://project365.com.au/ross/2010/01/08/project360-com-au-08-01-10-copyright-ross-cataldo/

I like those small LED keychain lights. I found that if you use anything near the brightness of a flashlight, it's just too much and looses details.

Photo from a few years ago, it's actually pitch black but a car drove by. I wrote this backwards too. lol

Michael Bosanko was featured in the January issue of Photo Pro and some of his images are stunning. He is a fantastic light graffiti artist. You should check him out: http://www.michaelbosanko.com/

Does Bosanko not see the irony when he writes something like this

"I set one golden rule; absolutely NO photo editing… everything I do is captured in one exposure. On rare occasions I will crop an image, or use slight colour correction, but these are few and far between, which means composition, correct colour and light, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, the complete works all take place in-camera. By doing all this, my work becomes 100% authentic… in other words, what you see is what you get. I do not use wires or rigs of any kind... everything I create is done freestyle... I find the process organic, mesmerising, magical..." (My underline).

Oh really? So my eyes work just like a camera now? Last I checked, me watching you light paint is not anywhere near what the final image looks like. So he flies in the face of himself with that one. I only bring this up because I hear it way too often from people who must want to think of themselves as purists. As though digital manip. is any different from film. I forgot how many times I go look at something and all I see is sepia/cross processing/double exposure!
