Canonrumors is reporting that the new 1D Mk IV will actually be called the 1D Mk V.
This makes sense since most Asian cultures consider the number Four to be unlucky.
Number 4 is considered an unlucky number in Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and Japanese cultures because it is nearly homophonous to the word "death". Due to that, many numbered product lines skip the "4": e.g. Nokia cell phones (there is no series beginning with a 4), Palm PDAs, Canon PowerShot G's series (after G3 goes G5), etc. In East Asia, some buildings do not have a 4th floor. (Compare with the American practice of some buildings not having a 13th floor because 13 is considered unlucky.) In Hong Kong, some high-rise residential buildings miss ALL floor numbers with "4", e.g. 4, 14, 24, 34 and all 40-49 floors. As a result, a building whose highest floor is number 50 may actually have only 36 physical floors.

Nokia aren't asian.
Stoopid wikipedia.
I am yet to go into a building with missing numbers in Hong Kong. They're suppose to be out there, but I guess they're private residential building and private office buildings mainly (I live in a semi-government building... private, but owned by the government, as do my relatives in Hong Kong).
It's like building in Western countries that miss the number 13 (also unlucky to some Asians). I've never seen a building like that, but I suppose they exist, the internet and TV told me so.

This makes sense, I guess. Heck, what's in a name, anyways!
I'm still really surprised that more info hasn't leaked out this close to the supposed release event.

Wikipedia doesn't state that Nokia is Asian! Doesn't stop them taking note of the importance of local customs in important global markets.

FWIW, all the taller hotels I've ever been in in the US omit the 13th floor.

Probably skipping 4 because it is unlucky in japan. Here a quote about.com
"The Japanese don't like the number 4 and 9 because of their pronunciation. Four is pronounced "shi" which is the same pronunciation as death. Nine is pronounced "ku" which has the same pronunciation as agony or torture.
There are many hospitals that don't have these numbers as the room number or even the floor number. The Japanese also dislike Friday the13th, though many of them are not Christians. There are no seats with numbers 4, 9 and 13 on passenger planes of the All Nippon Airways."

The Hoff's building sounds like it was made by a superstitious Hong Konger. Quite likely in New Hong Kong... I mean "Vancouver". ;)

I saw one at an airport hotel in China, and some here in Vegas are missing 13. They might have changed it by now. It's been a while since I've seen it, but you know luck plays a big part in this town.
