We were walking along the beach under the full moon; this was on an island in the middle of the Indian Ocean with absolutely no other lights to get in the way. The moon was so bright that it was casting really hard shadows. I have never tried to photograph the moon before so this seemed the perfect opportunity.

Camera 1D MkII

Neil, I assume you must have hand held this shot if you were walking along a beach.
I take my hat off to you, that is a great moon shot.

I know the rule of thumb is 1/focal length and 100-400 with 1.4 TC is 560 which is close to the 500 shutter speed but what detail.

Do you think it might be IS or the lack of light pollution or do you have three legs.

I ran back and got a triopd :(

The lack of light polution was really obvious, as I said I have never tried to shoot the moon before but I have taken many night shots in the UK and the sky always has a brown tinge from the sodium lighting, this sky was black black black and the moon was so bright.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I was thinking of getting the 100-400 and 1.4 on the camera for a quick hand held.

What did I just say. :o

You have a very understanding better half to a) take that lot with you on holiday and b) interrupt a moonlit walk on a Maldives beach to say 'just nipping back to ge tthe tripod'!!! How do you do it?

I was looking though your gallery and my opinion is that the Maldives Ministry of Tourism should hire you on the spot! :-)
