At 6pm today, South Yorkshire Fire Brigades Union went on strike over a shifts dispute. Here are a selection of images. Full gallery at: http://www.pbase.com/adamgrayphotography/syfs_strike

Comments and critique would be very much appreciated. I'm currently doing an NCTJ Photojournalism course so this is the kind of work I want to get into and really nail down.

Nice series. Wonder how many houses burned down in the interim?

Thanks, no more critique? There were no major incidents going from fire service press releases and media coverage, seemed to go off without any big results. It's pretty fair what they are striking for really - it's to do with childcare rather than pay.

I thought the one with the kid, firefighter, and sign was a great picture of what the story is all about. That was my pick (#4).

Number 4 is the best with number 5 a close second. Nice work!

Thanks guys, seems like #4 is the favourite. I knew that's what paper's would look for so I took it. And yes, it does fit the story the best I guess.

Good work, you've explained the story and emotion in these images very well.

Did you get into any local/national press with these?

Thanks Anke. I didn't, no. But then I never tried pushing them out to anyone. Which is something I should be doing really considering what i'm doing! Need to somehow get hold of the ftp addresses of the wire agencies etc so that I can move my work quickly. Any ideas? Not sure if they're maybe still marketable as the strike may go national?

It's the turn of the postmen tomorrow though and I really need to catch up on literally no sleep for weeks. Think i'll give it a miss and see if I can catch something in the afternoon.

Most local newspapers carry e-mail addresses of the picture editors, send them some small thumbs of the shots, they'll get back to you if they want to run them. Who knows you might even get some work out of it. Worth a go.

There is also this book (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0907297617/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=471057153&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0907297579&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=0JPDYTNF6E52R0TVAHTE) which has lots of contact details of where to send images.

Excellent thanks Anke. I'm guessing something like 400px should be sufficient? That books on my wish list, will have to buy it asap! Should have moved them yesterday really, could still give it a go now I guess as they could potentially get used during Friday's strike.

If you send them now, then they could potentially be the first e-mails on the picture editors inbox :)

Yeah, don't give them too big or they'll run them, even if they are poor quality, you'd be surprised how small an image they can print. Best thing is to watermark them.

Not watermarked but only sized to 400px and are copyrighted within the exif data. Will check to make sure they don't get used without my permission. Bit annoying really as I reckon they're better than what PA used from the same place. Need to learn to send mine off asap! Will try a few regionals and wire agencies that I can find e-mail's for.

Cheers,
Adam
