View Full Version : black dot right in the middle of the sensor? S90

Hi all

So disappointed. I took my brand new S90 on a trip this weekend and the first time I pulled it out it had a black dot in the middle of the screen - definitely on the sensor as all photos that are light in the middle show it - darker photos don't show it as much but it's definitely there. Any idea what this could be?

I'm of two minds about this camera. Love the controls. Love the size. Can't say I'm awfully impressed with the photos, other than some very specific ones. Far-off focus is not all that great. A photo my 30D smoked earlier this year is fuzzy crap with the S90.

What else can you expect with a pocket P&S though, you know?

I guess I will just have to literally use it as a pocket camera and simply not expect to carry it as a substitute when I know I want to get a good shot of anything in particular. I had hoped it would be a worthy sub for when I simply didn't want to carry my 30D and I'm not as impressed as I could be with the ones I took. It seems like it would be more of a "get the moment/people shots/fun" kind of camera.

To be fair, after I saw the black dot I didn't carry it the rest of the wkd but I did take about 100 shots on that walk - and if 15 turned out the way I'd like I'll be surprised. I'll post the shots and the ratio later.

Can you target-focus with the G11 any better?

Before you do, please post a photo showing the black dot. It could be sensor dust, a problem which has plagued the G-series and which renders the camera totally unusable.

Looks like it's a mote in the lens somewhere. On the sensor it'd be a lot sharper.

is it even possible to fix? not that I still have the camera - I exchanged it.

Not without disassembly; exchanging it was the right move. Outside the exchange period, sending it to Canon to fix would be the best solution.
