I just got the new B&H catalog in the mail and next to the 70-200 2.8 IS it lists "call/log-on" for the price. The only other Canon lens that has this designation is the EF-S 17-85 which is clearly on the way out.

The Canon 70-200 2.8 II will see the light of day this side of the year for announcement. Improved optics at 2.8 and new 5 stop IS. It was suppose to be announced with the 1D Mark IV but was delayed slightly. I don’t deal with pricing at all but expect it to be 30% more expensive than the current model.

Oh and I worked out that I can afford the lens by February or March next year (hopefully I get some more work on the side so I can afford it sooner). So I hope they release it soon so that by Feb or March it will be easy to get.

Either that, or I have the money when it's announced so I can go and be the first on the waiting list. ;)I might have a dilemma. I'm saving for the 100 2.8L macro at the moment, but with this potential new 70-200, I might have to rethink my priorities. Did your local shop have the 70-200 2.8IS in stock and able to sell? If yes, then ok, maybe the rumor is true. If they were out-of-stock on the lens, then it's another roll of the dice for this rumor.

CanonRumors (http://www.canonrumors.com/) now reports that the 70-200 2.8 IS II was originally scheduled for a November 24 release, but it has since been changed to January 2010 for marketing reasons [my guess is, with the rebates going on and the current version on there, they want to deplete as much of the current version stock as possible]. Supposedly it and the 24-70 2.8 IS II will be announced concurrently along with the 1Ds Mark IV. I think that is a stretch (the whole trio in Jan). But it looks like we will see each of those three "soon" (as has always been the case, lol). Define "soon" however you want, tomorrow, or sometime before you die. :)

bigcountry

I just bought the Mk I because I can't wait. When the Mk II comes out I will probably make a decision at that time. The rebate angle made sense to me. They were not going to cannibalize their own rebate program. What I've found, and it agree with many people here is that the Mk I is a fine lens. Being the person I am I will probably get the Mk II but I absolutely needed the Mk I in early January for a Japan trip so I pulled the trigger now and bought one locally. I cannot tell any sharpness difference from my f/4 IS copy.

Stealthy Ninja

I agree with the rebate point. Makes sense. In fact some people were saying before that it doesn't make sense to bring it out while the rebates are still going (as I remember).

So it makes perfect sense to someone out there.

I noticed in the 1D Mark IV instruction manual that, when you use a 70-200 f/2.8 IS lens with the 1.4x TC, you should select only the center AF point, since selecting any other point could cause errors with that lens/TC combination. This is interesting, because this lens/TC combination is on the list of lenses that can cross-type f/4 focus to all 39 cross-type AF points on the 1D Mark IV. I suspect Canon is anxious to get a new 70-200 f/2.8 IS II on the market to eliminate that problem.

All you said is true. But they're not without their flaws.

My friend had a 24-70 which he thought was fine. Till we tested it. Turns out it was back or front focusing (sorry can't remember).

huh? (I don't understand your english, but...) It's time for an update. It's an 8 year old design, and while not ancient, could use improvement if only due to the mass appeal this lens has. According to your logic, we'd never get new lenses.

I hope they make it sharp at 2.8, and add a newer IS. My biggest beef with this lens is that the wide-open performance is so bad that I wouldn't use it less than f4 anyway. Extra bulk and weight for nothing. For me that is.

I'd like to see a complete set of zoom lenses tailored for 1.3x crop:

1. EF-M 10-18 f/4L
2. EF-M 18-55 f/2L IS
3. EF 55-155 f/2.8L IS
4. EF 155-310 f/4L IS

Note: EF-M is my designation for "medium back" rear lens element with image circle that just covers the 1.3x crop sensor.

Sorry I was referring to the previous poster who said that pros get their lenses re-calibrated every year or so.

I totally DO hope they update the 70-200 2.8L IS, because I'm waiting for it (all you need to do is read my previous posts to see that). I have tried a 2.8L IS and I found it pretty sharp at 2.8. Maybe you have a bad copy. :)

No offense dude, but there is no WAY Canon would make lenses just for the relatively few 1D series users. :)

Well, as people said, there wasn't much they could do to improve the original. I don't know how much more you could expect... perhaps it serves you coffee? :p

They have seemed to improve what needed to be done to make the cheaper f/4 IS less of an option (IS is now the same or better and I assume it will be sharper).

IMHO the IS is the best thing they could have updated. The rest are just extras. :)

You own it, I've only tested it. But I think you could probably say "sharper at 2.8" because it's already pretty sharp at 2.8. :)

It would be awesome it it turns out to be as sharp at 2.8 as the f/4 is at f/4! Imagine how sharp that would be stopped down to f/4 then!

Talking about large prices:
Digital Rev (Hong Kong store) are taking pre-orders on the 70-200 2.8L IS II
http://www.digitalrev.com/en/canon-ef-70-200mm-f2-dot-8-l-is-ii-7697.html

HK$34,980.00

I think they must be taking the UK pound price and directly converting it (this would make the lens a very unrealistic $4000USD).

That company are the price gouging kings.

If it turns out it really is that expensive. There is NO WAY I will get one. That's the MRP of the 1DIV.

krepta
21st of January 2010 (Thu), 02:07
That can't be right, it's well over a reasonable price. And by reasonable, we already assumed the normal-for-Canon price gouging at $3000USD.

But it could be like how Best Buy had the 7D for way above retail price during pre-order period, and then the price came back down to normal.

Stealthy Ninja
21st of January 2010 (Thu), 02:53
Probably it will come down once they know the US/HK price (which should be pretty the same, just converted one to another). They're probably just putting a super high price so they're covered.

I don't think they'll be getting too many pre-orders... though the way some rich guys buy camera gear (they don't need) in Hong Kong I wouldn't be surprised.

$2899 is $19,900 HKD. More than I suspected. But the Aus dollar fluctuates anyway (and is higher than usual right now). There was a time about a year ago that $2899 would be $11,900HKD).

Most likely it will be a different USD price. The HKD is pegged to the US dollar. So we'll be similar to that price.

If it IS $2,600 USD. That will be $20,000 HKD too. I hope it's more around the $2400 USD mark.

I have to say, the Canon HK website is darn slow at updating. It still doesn't have the 70-200 2.8L IS II. Even the China site has it.

^^ I'd say both are pricing it way higher than it will be so they don't make any loss or look bad.

No one really knows the price (other than relying on the UK pricing, but that's not a good way to measure it) so companies just put some crazy high price up there to get some orders without losing anything. They can always bring the price down, but if they price it too low right now it'll look bad if they raise the price later.

You're right, but there are slight fluctuaions. It's never exactly 7.8 to 1, but it never moves more that 1.3% off the mark (it's controlled somehow).
