Seems odd they would release a new pro level body without any new lenses, doesn't it?

I'm curious as to why a pro-level body with a pro-level price has a crop sensor, but that's off-topic. I'm still going to get a 70-200 f/2.8 before 12 January 2010, one way or another. I have plenty of budget now to get a II version if it is ever offered.

Maybe perhaps because the majority of the photographers for whom the 1D series cameras were designed for...SPORTS/WILDLIFE shooters & Photojournalists, actually PREFER the 1.3x crop factor over FULL FRAME?
They like the extra reach, the clean high end ISOs, and the incredible burst rate. If they want a FULL FRAME sensor DSLR, they have a few to choose from.
I think it's NICE to have the option...1.6x crop, 1.3x crop, and Full Frame.

I thought this too (about the lenses) seems weird they didn't bring out some lenses too.
Perhaps the body was rushed to compete with the D3s... therefore the lenses that were supposed to come out with it (in Jan) are not ready yet.
Let's hope not, we don't want recalls etc.

Well the 100mm f/2.8L macro lens was released around a month ago.

Yeah, with the 7D. See the point?! ;)
Usually: new camera = new lens.

One step at a time.

No three steps at a time. It's called a jump.

While I'm a fan of jumps, they more often lead to falling. When it comes to stuff like this, I'd much rather have verrry deliberate steps taken :)

BORRRING (as Homer might say).
Personally I like large backward leaps into trees and such.

I found it strange as well that we saw no new lenses with the 1D Mk IV.
Just thought of something, though. A few days back, Canonrumors made mention of another round of Canon instant rebates for this fall (starting late October/early November?). The current 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM is expected to be on that list. That would be a good way for Canon to clear out remaining stock of this lens in anticipation for the launch of a version II early in 2010?
In any case, now that the 1D Mk IV has been announced a few days ago and we still have no news of new lenses, I presume the next new lenses will be announced with the launch of the 1Ds Mk IV and/or the 60D in spring 2010. Of course, I hope I am wrong. A little treat in time for Christmas would be great. :)

Aren't instant rebates just discounts?!
Here in HK we don't get rebates, just discounts.
I agree that a bunch on lenses will probably come out after Canon sells off a bunch 'o stock.
As for release dates:
Personally I hope the 70-200 2.8L IS II comes out the day I have enough money to buy it. ;)
BTW I played a bit with someones 24-70. We compared it with a Carl Zeiss 85mm (Canon mount) and the 100mm 2.8L IS.
The Zeiss and the Canon were very close (I liked the Zeiss SLIGHTLY more, but it's MF only...).
The 24-70 was WAY worse... but it turns out it was back/front focusing. So we used liveview to MF and it was closer, but noticeably not as good as the other two (bit of an unfair test I know).
So... I hope they bring out a new 24-70 2.8 too

Here in HK we don't get rebates, just discounts.Apparently the US and Canada Fall instant rebates are in effect as of today. B&H is already showing the discounts, even though I can't find a Canon pdf flyer, which Canon usually releases with the rebate period.

I saw it on the 70-200f/2.8isL but not for the 50L. I'm going to get a 50L very soon, like today if possible.
I also see the same thing on adorama.

I saw it on the 70-200f/2.8isL but not for the 50L. I'm going to get a 50L very soon, like today if possible.
I also see the same thing on adorama.I don't believe the 50L is included in the rebates this time around. That's unfortunate because I was also considering it. :(
Here is a non-official list:
