I've looked and looked at the various sections on the site and my question seems to fit in the General Category so here goes:
I see many links to either various sites, forums, threads, etc ... with a simple name like click here and when you click the here link, you end up at a site and the URL is anywhere from 20 to 85 characters long.
How does one "convert" a long-named link to a simple here or other name of one's choosing?
Thanks,
Ray

When you use the insert link icon it gives you a window in which you enter the URL. When you enter the URL and then hit enter, you get a line like this:
http://www.mac-photo.net
with the part outside of the brackets (between the URL tags) highlighted. You can then edit that part to say whatever you want it to say like this:
Mark's Site (http://www.mac-photo.net)
However, if you just enter a url directly, like this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/
it will be directly converted to a link which will look like this:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/
If you want, you can then edit your post to the same format as in the first example and insert whatever words you want like this:
B&H Photo (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/)
which will render in the thread like this: B&H Photo (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/)

Of course, that's the easiest way. :)

I was just playing with it and noticed a couple of things:
1) If you have the advanced WYSIWYG editor selected in your User CP, the procedure suggested by the above posters will work in the "Quick Reply" box, but not when you hit the "Post Reply" button at the bottom left. The advanced editor will automatically parse your link and you won't see the (url) and (/url) tags.
2) If you go into your User CP under "Edit Options" and select the Standard Editor, it works perfectly:
Link back to this thread. (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=8865666)
When you insert your link, the part outside the first URL bracket shows up selected/highlighted in blue (or whatever color you're using in your defaults). If you simply start typing, it will insert the text you want to use for the link.

I clicked the icon (how did you get the icon to show in your message ??) Rt-click on it just as you would any other image. Pick "Copy Link Location", click on http://photography-on-the.net/forum/images/editor/insertimage.gif & paste it in this field.
