Hi,
I was wondering how shots like the one below are taken. Mainly in resect to the lighting/style of the shot.

(some nudity is on the above site)
I like how the photo was taken during the day but the sky behind has a 'night feel' to it. Was it in an in camera and lighting technique or is it just photoshopping?

I can't see how you could come out with an image like that out of the camera...If you could it would likely be so difficult that twenty minutes in photoshop by these wizards, some on this form, and a regular shot would turn into this!

OK - thanks
So if symes is right - how do I get a picture to look like this in Photoshop? Does it help to get a certain light when I initially take the photo?

For me it looks like a studio shot.
The girl took a shower before the shot, stepped on the jet-sky and someone splashed the water on the front of the jet-sky while the photographer was shooting...

So you think the background is either a backdrop or faked?

possibly backdrop...
if it were a uniform background and then the picture added digitally, I guess it would've been a hard job with all the little drops...

And do you think that the backdrop is just darker from the start or has he done some clever lighting?

Looks like studio to me.
The clouds have shadows on bottom right, meaning sun is up on left, yet some shadows on her are on the left. - Where it should be naturally lightest. Of course anything is possible in photoshop.

Studio shot with perhaps some PS editing.
Note the water spray at the front denotes speed (and wind) but there is no indication of it in the model's hair. Even though the hair is wet it should be blown back if there is any speed involved.
The comment about the cloud's shadows is also another clue. Note the lighting on the model's inner thigh. Don't think you would have achieved that in a real shot.
This is still a great image.

Fill flash is a possibility also.

that's what I was thinking also. Underexposing the background and lighting the foreground with a couple of strobes could do the trick.

How would you go about doing this? Are you on the lines of the background is a backdrop? if so, how do you stop the strobes lighting the background?

To my untrained eye, I agree with the "studio shot" people. I noticed all the above, as well as the splash angle is incorrect. For it to be real, the splash would have been on the front (toward the camera) of the jetski if you consider physics and the way the steering things are set.

Her hair says "I'm standing still!" The water (at left) appears to be sprayed downwards at the front of the jetski, before being sprayed up. I\My best guess would be posed / studio shot.

I noticed the hair too. It's still....

Hair is too still and why would water be splashing onto the top front of the jetski from that angle? Looks like a hose to me. ;)
I say studio shot.

You check your meter to see what the background light exposure is. Manually set the Fstop and shutter to severely UNDERexposed. Turn on and use your flash. The flash will properly expose your subject, while the background (sea and sky) are underexposed... thus the darkness.

My first guess was flash with sever underexposure of backround, because the shadow under the jaw looks like camera mounted flash, as well as the flat look of the model.
Jetskies go up and down, so maybe it was in the "down" part of the jump of something... but the weird thing is that there's no splash between the camera and the ski...
So, I'm not sure.

I'd say it's a beached jetski someone has thrown a bucket of water on the front of.

I agree with mgbeach. Beside the hair not moving, no muscles are flexing (not that she has many), because that would be sooome ride to control as shot. So I'm going with beached jet ski, umbrella strobe as main light off to the left and up about 45 degrees, (Shadows aren't harsh enough for pinpoint light), severely underexposed sky and water in the backgroud.

That's exactly what I thought

Probably in a professional studio in front of a green screen. You'd almost need to have the photographer riding a jetski alongside otherwise.

JetSki on beach, hot chick, water hose, fill flash, and photoshop!
