View Full Version : Fired? before the job?

About 6-8 weeks ago I wound up being asked to do a wedding for a young couple in our church. While nothing had been written down aside from an email listing the "Formal" poses she wanted, it was just a verbal agreement. Last night I got an email from the bride saying that a family member had offered to do the photos and she felt she couldn't say "No" and that she was sorry for the inconvenience but that I wouldn't be needed for the pictures.
Now i have to admit I was nervous as this would have been my FIRST wedding and paid job. I wasn't going to charge much and despite my nervousness was beginning to look forward to it.
I should feel relieved as I am not sure I am up to par for doing a wedding yet, but at the same time it irks me to be fired before I had a chance to do anything.

technically you weren't hired. You're hired when the contract is signed and the deposit is paid.

yeah I know, but it still gets to me.
I guess I shouldn't let it bother me so much

Same thing happened to me the other month. I was very relieved as I felt that I wasn't ready for it yet. She probably got it for free from a family member...which is what happened in my case. Oh well!

Probably. I just hope that they turn out to be really good photos.

They probably wont! I can tell you my bride came to me a week after her wedding and asked if I would be interested in doing some bridal portraits. I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have asked me that if her pictures had turned out great. Oh well...sometimes it's hard to compete with "free".

You should have asked to be paid up front. You wouldn't have been fired then. Next time say "I need $800 to do the shoot and half paid today to book the day."
That $800 guarantees digital proofs but nothing further. Prints are bought individually from your newly setup Exposure Manager website. :)
