Don't laugh, but is there a 'gizmo' that extends the hot shoe vertically by 2-3 inches, and if one could do that, would that help with red eye?
I haven't been able to find anything like that. BTW, I am trying to avoid using a flash bracket.

Here's another source for an off-camera cord - http://www.flashzebra.com/ttlcords/index.shtml - plus these cords are reasonably priced.

are you talking about a flash bracket? (metal frame that holds the flash above the camera/lens)

not necessarily...it all depends on which camera the OP wants to mount, and whether that will be a 40d w/o a grip, or a 1d. Size of the camera makes a big impact on which bracket is best.

Thanks for all the replies
The method you were asking about would apply a lot of leverage to the hot shoe. It would help some with redeye, at least while using a short lens
That’s what I thought. I don’t know how strong the hot shoes are constructed, and the point you made about leverage is a concern indeed. That’s probably why the gizmo I am talking about does not exist. Besides, if it would help with only short lenses, then it’s probably not worth the risk to use something like that.
are you talking about a flash bracket
No, I am trying to avoid a flash bracket, just something that goes on the hot shoe to elevate the flash by 2-3 inches.
