Hello Gurus!

I am waiting for my EF 85mm f/1.8 to arrive. I will be using it for both indoor and outdoor portrait photography.

Do i need a lens filter?

Is a polariser useless for portrait taking?

Is the Hoya Super-HMC PRO 1 Circular Polarizer or the B + W Kaesemann MRC Circular Polarizer Filter better?

Thanks

Dave

A polarizing filter is useful for a making blue skies darker and for enabling you to reduce the effect of reflections. It will let you see what's under the surface of water or behind glass, for example, by reducing the reflections on the surface of the water or glass.

In my opinion, you do not need a UV or skylight filter as "protection" if you use a good quality lens hood (such as Canon's ET-65III) on the lens at all times. The lens hood has several benefits. First, it will help to eliminate flare due to strong light sources just outside your subject area. Second, it will keep your fingers (and a lot more) from touching the front lens surface. Third, it will provide a good measure of crash protection if you bump into something or drop the camera onto the lens.

I don't use a filter on mine. It's recessed enough with the hood. It's a great lens. You're going to love it.

No you don't need a filter.
I don't need insurance for my house..........but I have it.

Pay your money take your choice.

I use Hoya HMC pro 1 on most lenses.

when you spent 400-few thousand on a lense 40-80 for good UV filter won't hurt you. I alwyas use UV to protect my lenses. my it is a personal choise
