Are any of the Lowepro SlingShot bags big enough? I want a bag that I can use when I am on my bicycle. It must hold 40D w/Canon 400L attached. I like that style carry for the bike.

I have a slingshot 200 AW. I like the bag and the style. It holds my 7d w/28-235 along with hood attached properly with no problem. If you want I can measure that length if you would like.

I looked at the 100 in the store, looked way too small. Haven't seen a 300 but I wanted something that's not too huge.

p.s. in addition to the 7d with the lens on it, I can also carry 3 other lenses, a few hoods, spare battery, memory card, etc. It's a pretty spacious bag.

It will close fine with these lenses plus hood (lens contracted of course). By my measure, the limit is about ~8.7" total give or take a little. Hope this helps

Nicksan uses the 200 f2 with the slingshot 200, but not mounted.

I have the slingshot 300 which is a great bag. If you were to put it in sideways, it would probably fit in there.

My 20D with 100-400 attached will fit in the 200.

What about the bicycle bit? On any bike, everything normally slips around to the front - which is a big nuisance. Has anyone got experience.

Slingshots don't tend to stay put very well - the Kata 3N1 series works, though, in either a straight or cross-strapped backpack configuration (cross-strapped, you can quickly unhook one buckle and swing the pack under your arm like a sling pack, but it might get a little tight around the neck depending on your riding position - more hunched, more uncomfy).

The slingshot 300 has a waist belt which makes it stay on very well.

The 200, which I also own, has a small strap that comes up from one corner of the bag and snaps onto the chest strap in the front, aslo helping secure it in place.

I've used my 300 on my ATV going on the roughest terrain, from crawling over boulders, splashing through mud holes, to ripping at 50 mph (approx 100 kmh) across fields, and it's always stayed put because of the waist belt.

Based on my experience with the slingshot 200, I can't recommend it as a bag if you're intending to bicycle around with it holding your gear (even with the waist strap). As another poster mentioned, I would consider the kata 1-n-x bags in the backpack configuration. There are also other backpack style bags that would work well for a bike rider.

Lowepro Fastpack 350.
2 Backpack style straps with side access like the Slingshot.
Also more comfortable with too wear with two straps with long lens.
Distributes the weight better.

I would also choose the Kata 3N1 over the slingshot. The 3N1 is an awesome pack, very easy to use and protects the camera gear well.

No, you can't put a mounted 400/5.6L in a Slingshot. At least, I have the Slingshot 300, and the 1d/5d, and can't. You can carry them dismounted, but not mounted.

If I recall correctly, I only had about an inch clearance with the 70-200 f/4L IS attached... this is with the SS300.

SS200... 70-200/4 IS mounted on a 40D will be a tight fit... tighter with a filter on too!
anything bigger (70-200 2.8, 100-400, etc) won't fit mounted IF you're using the bag the way it came configured. they will fit 'fine' if you re-arrange/remove the compartments... the 'quick access' becomes a little less quick by this point...
You can find a lot of bag configurations on photo sites like flickr....
