Opinion Please

Is this portrait acceptable. Or is it TOO bright in places.
Personally, I like it. But does it fall within the boundaries of OK...photographically ?

I'm no professional either, but it seems good to me. He seems to be thinking "you talkin' to me?"

One thing that does bother me though, is the shallow DOF. His ears are out of focus.

I think it looks great, you overcame the hardest part which is nice bokeh around the outer face but the eyes are sharp.

I like the photo. It's warm and personable but I ran it thru Neat Image and like the softer skin tones that produces. The image is a classic to start with IMO, color, composition, focus, and no, I don't think it's too bright anywhere.

Its a good photo but pulling back for more dof would improve it - I would like to see the ears in focus. Good subject, great expression, and could be the perfect model for years.

I, absolutely, have no authority of stating what's photographically ok or not - I just know what I like and what makes me continue looking at a photo and this one, I like looking at and smiling at the little boy.


I am intrigued by portraits that display something more than a group of people smiling at the camera in a posed shot (I'll never be able to photograph a wedding, LOL) and this one feels like you captured a moment and get to keep it safe, forever.

Thank you all very much. Obviously I love it, he's my son. I just wondered whether or not it would be acceptable to produce this kind of shot for someone else. It's easy to look at your own kids and say, wow what a gorgeous shot and of course all of your close family and friends agree.

But if paid to take shots would someone else find this kind of informal portrait acceptable, considering A the blown highlights on the shirt, B the unposed aspect. The reason I ask is because someone has asked me to take some shots of their kids, but in their words...not the norm... I dunno maybe I'll just do lots of different stuff and let them choose. Just trying to think ahead.

I don't like this photo so much. The angle makes his forehead look a little large, and things are out of proportion. I'd probably stand back a little and use a longer lens. That's just my taste though.

Thanks Tim. I was thinking of getting the 85mm1.8 or maybe even the 85mm1.2L for this kind of thing would that kind of focal length help lessen the distortion/ proportions. If so is there really a thousand pounds worth of difference in quality between those two lenses?
