I want to see newest replied to threads first in for sale and trade

I have went into my profile and changed the setting under options and at the bottom of the forums to newest first with no luck

All you need to do is click on the "Last Post" column heading in the Sell section and they'll be sorted by how replied last. No need to make changes in your user profile.
