My 10d's pop up flash does not pop up any more. I am not totally lost as my 550EX speedlite still operates perfectly. Everything else is A1 OK. Any ideas?

i do not know the 10D at all - but the EOS5 has this problem reported - there is a microswitch under the hotshoe to tell the camera that an external camera is mounted and so the flash does not try to pop up
i'll try and find the article on repair - maybe its the same on 10D
AS I SAID THIS IS FOR EOS5 AND MAYNOT APPLY

Are you saying the flash does not pop up automatically or when you press that little button that's supposed to pop the flash? If it's the former, the flash only pops up automatically in the Basic modes, not in Creative Zone mode.

The flash doesn't pop up at all when set to fully auto and with my hand in front of the lens to simulate 'darkness'

sorry to hear that. but it sounds like a repair job is in order. on the other hand, your 550EX works just fine so it shouldn't impede anything. -alex

I've seen this condition on a couple of cameras.
The flash head does not want to pop up automatically, so you push the flash button, and it still does not pop up. It tries to go about three times, and then it posts an Err 5 message (which means that it thinks something is blocking it from going up).
However, it might not be totally broken, and it is just a little sticky from disuse. So, with one hand, you push the flash button, and with fingernails and fingers of the other hand, you pry the flash head up. Generally, you will get it up. Now, push it back down and repeat the process.
After two or three cycles of this, the flash head may pop up on its own. If it does not do it right within five cycles or so, then I would call Canon about a repair. If the flash head on my camera is not operated every month or so, then it gets sticky this way.

the hotshoe needs cleaning! the camera still thinks there's a flash on the hotshoe
like etaf said. all Eos camera's have this switch.
here are some steps to help you.
first remove the plate on the hotshoe like this:

remove these four screws and clean the hotshoe

now put it all back together and it should work fine again.
hope this helps.

I tried prising the flash up and closing it a few times to no avail, so I don't think it is 'sticking'. I am now carefully trying to dismantle the hotshoe to try and find something there
