Hello you experts - I'm sure one of you can help with my problem. I have just bought a Samsung N110 netbook so that I can download my pictures onto Lightroom while I'm travelling. I've loaded LR onto it, and all was well until I tried to import some pictures (using a card reader). The import dialogue box does not show the thumbnails. Also, the screen doesn't show the entire dialogue box so I can't see the bottom of it - I therefore can't complete the import process, even if I could see the thumbnails. The screen resolution of the netbook is 1024 x 600. Thanks for your help.

Have none of our POTN boffins got an answer to this problem?

Roy, I have no experience w/netbooks, but from what I've read (yes, Monty, via g00gle searches...a one-hour train ride to work every morning can get boring ;)):

Lightroom requires a minimum of 1024x768. Samsung has an application for displaying virtual resolutions, which should overcome the problem you're seeing.

Good luck!

Thanks Ken, I'll investigate those links.

(Now I know how you come up with some of the WAIN answers - a 1-hour train journey!)

If all else fails, just hitting "Enter" should start the import...

Not on Windows, but on mac (on a 1024x768 screen), the import dialog box (not from card, but from disk, no card reader available now) (without previews) is way smaller then 600 px. Isn't it possible to resize the window?
Here it resizes to screen automatically, down to a 640x480 screen res...

If all else fails again, might be that Import from disk works, where import from device doesn't?

Thanks Rene. Just minutes ago, I figured out that hitting Enter did the trick! However, I still can't resize the Import box and I can't get the thumbnail preview window. It might be something I have to live with (however inconvenient) unless some bright spark comes up with a solution.

;)

Screenshot maybe?

This is my Powerbook on 600 x 480 (god, that looks awful):

This is what I get.

Worst case Roy, you can also hit "Alt-Spacebar" to get the window menu, then hit "M" (for move), and then you can use your arrow keys to move the dialogue box accordingly...

Edit:{Just tried it and the import dialogue does behave like an "MS Window", hence you can use Alt-Spacebar for the window menu}

I can now move the dialogue box Ken but my remaining problem is the lack of the thumbnail/preview panel and the lack of the check box for it (see the screenshot in my previous post). Incidentally, interestingly enough, LR3 doesn't display this problem!

Now I see what you mean Roy...looks as though your import dialogue is cropped just below the "initial previews' line...if you move the box up, are you not able to grab the bottom edge to stretch the window downwards?

No, because every time I come out of the move mode, or try to use the cursor, the box reverts to its original position (slightly larger than the screen!).

Ugh...I'm all out of suggestions then...maybe that virtual display mode is the key (link in prev. post)...

I'm investigating that now Ken, but it seems a touch involved.

This is what I get.

Can't read the screenshot, but there seem to be more lines in the dialog box then in my screenshot. Any way to make them less?

I'm sorry about the quality of the screen shot (I'll try and do a better one) but the last box you can see at the bottom is the initial previews box.

Roy (and René), it appears you have the file handling set at "Copy photos to a new location..." as well as importing from a memory card, hence the extra lines in the box.

As a test, first copy the images from memory card to a local folder you plan on using for storage. Then import and change the file handling method to "Add photos to catalog without moving." Then you can try resizing the window (either from top or bottom) to see if the bottom half shows up.

Ken - you're a genius! I tried what you suggest and bingo! I can now see the whole box - and the thumbnail/preview pane. Thanks for all your help (and perseverence).

That's what I meant here:
might be that Import from disk works, where import from device doesn't?

Glad it works :)

Sorry Rene, I must have misunderstood what you meant. Anyway, all's well that ends well. Thanks.
