Ok everyone, the pictures are all sorted out and the voting can begin. Congratulations everyone, there is one fine crop of pictures to choose from!! :D
Voting Rounds:
There will be 2 rounds of voting, this one and a final.
33% of each group will go through to the next round. That means:
Group 1: 9 photos in all, so 3 will progress
Groups 2/3: 7 photos in each, so 2 will progress from each group.
Consequently, the final will consist of 7 photos competing for first, second and third place.
Voting:
To keep the contest brief, voting in each round will last for 5 days.
Since each group is a separate, mini contest, please ensure that you vote in each group.
While we want to keep it fun, this contest is a little more serious then our usual ones, so please do not discuss any of the photos until voting in the final round has closed. I'm really keen to ensure that no-one feels the contest was biased against them.

Sorry, but putting photos in groups doesn't sound fair. What if the best photos are in the same group. It means one/some of the good ones will be knock out, no?

Unfortunately that is the only practical way to do the voting currently. I agree with You but I think this time the concerns have been addressed somewhat in that
Group 1: 9 photos in all, so 3 will progress
Groups 2/3: 7 photos in each, so 2 will progress from each group.
totally 7 photos will goto a new vote as I understand it.

Thanks Tommy,
Ok, tell me what I should do in this situation: my top 3 are in the same group.

aam, I guess there's two things I'd say in response.
Firstly, this is the first time I've run one of these contests and I'm happy to take suggestions for future improvements. If you have some other ideas, why not send me a PM? (that goes for everyone by the way)
Secondly, I think it is a fair way of running the contests. Lets take two possiblities - firstly that your (for example) photo is in a really tough group and secondly that it is in an easy group.
In the first case, your photo might not have made it through to the second round because the competition is simply too tough. However, if it can't beat those other photos in the first round, how is it going to beat them again in the final?
In the second case, your photo may well go through if there isn't much competition. However, if it then meets the other really strong photos from the first group, you are in the same situation in the final as if you had been in a tough group in the first round.
Does that make sense?
As I say, I think this is a fair way to run the contest, however I am perfectly happy to consider alternatives for the future ones. Drop me a pm if you have any suggestions
BB :)

Thats really though. But there can only be one winner and if all photos had been put into one vote then You would have been forced to choose anyway.

True, but when all photos have to compete for the 1st place, each got a fair & equal chance at it. It's not the case when photos are grouped.
In any case, this is Big_guy's organized competition and he is doing an excellent job. So I will not distract him from that.
Good luck everybody.
Disclaimer: I didn't submit a photo.

Well the first round voting is closed folks! Just a reminder of how the progression works. The next round will consist of the top:
3 photos from group 1
2 photos from group 2
2 photos from group 3.
Congratulations to everyone (especially those that made it through) :D I'll post up voting for the final round over the weekend (I'm on a training course at the moment so have very limited time).
