I tried to frame some fall foliage with some tree and grasses that hadn't changed yet. Did it work? And I know that the water is not level. I am sure I had the camera level so I do not know what happened there. Optical illusion???

The foliage you were trying to get is on the far bank? If your idea was to frame it with the tree branch at the top, the trees on the left, and the grass at the bottom, then the image looks like all frame and no subject. I would try to reduce the frame. For example, the area to the left of the trunks is wasted space.

Also, the shot looks washed out. Try increasing contrast and/or lowering the exposure/brightness.

Yes

I never noticed the wasted space until you pointed it out. What about a tighter frame and a lower angle to get more of the foliage on the far bank? I want to keep the reflection on the lake.

Totally agree. I'm naturally pulled into the pond/lake. I really think you need more of it. This would add better balance, imo.

If you had blurred the foreground the foliage on the far side would have stood out more. There is really no where for the eye to go in this picture except to the empty space where the water is.
