Hey everyone, just ordered a 17-40L last night from bh. Bh says my order has been shipped as of early this morning, and provided a tracking number. Problem is, everytime I try to track it I get an "Unable to track shipment" thing. Is this simply because it's to early, and the package hasn't reached a check point yet or something? Just wondering.....

When I've ordered from them it was usually after the package reached the UPS center before the tracking number started working. I wouldnt sweat it right now! and congrats on the new lens its a good one..

Thanks! That's what I thought, I just wanted to make sure. When dropping that much cash on a single lens the smallest things can put butterfly's in your tummy I guess. :-)

It can take a day or so for the package to show up in the tracking system. I think this is because B&H generate the tracking number, and the courier doesn't know what it is until it's at one of their facilities.

Yes, I have this problem frequently with B&H and it usually resolves in less than a day.

ditto, the tracking no. issue is w/ UPS not BHphoto in 24-48hrs you will have tracking.
I've ordered a bunch of gear from BHphoto, I've had this happen many a time.

When B&H tapes up your box and enters the shipping information in their computer, it is automatically generated by UPS and printed on the label, which is then applied to the box. At that point, UPS has a record of the number but no knowledge of where the package is, other than at B&H's loading dock. Therefore, it won't show any locations on their tracking web site.
Once the truck picks up all the boxes late in the afternoon at B&H and drops them off at the local sorting center, someone there will scan the labels as they roll off the truck. That's when the box will start showing up on their web tracking system, though usually I've seen a few hours delay in that process. Check in the morning and I'll bet you'll see that it has gone through the local sorting center (Maspeth, NY is typical) and is probably scanned back out for the next destination.
In my experience, DHL is the worst at showing where your package actually is. I've had the courier deliver a box to me before it even showed it was in my area.

Aw, yea, it's all good. The tracking number is working now. Only problem is it's saying the ETA is June 6th:evil:. Was hoping to get it in by tomorrow. Selected 2day air. Last order I made I ordered it Monday with 2day air, and it was in my hands that wendesday. Grrrrrrr, should have paid the extra for 1day. Need the lens for an event this sunday.

The lesson here is not to rely on equipment you don't have in your hand.

don't lose hope yet. about 1/4 the times, UPS delivers my 2-day or 3-day select packages one day earlier. keep refreshing the status page. :p

I usually order from BH on Sunday or Monday if I need it for the next weekend. Monday it will be boxed up and given to UPS, Tuesday gets to UPS-New Jersey distro center, Weds to Richmond, and usually on my door Thursday.
That way it also gives me one spare day for those occasions when I get to watch my package drive around Brooklyn because UPS put it on wrong truck and still get it by Friday. Just to find out Model can't make it on Saturday because of car accident.
I have also found out that tracking numbers take a bit to go active and at least FedEx is reusing previous numbers, which caused me some confusion back in November.
I will always take UPS over FedEx though as they deliver when I am home and FedEx likes leaving expensive cameras on my front porch all by themselves mid-afternoon.
Just my experience,

Does B&H charge tax for purchases in California?

UPS has two computer systems. The tracking information is not updated live to the system available to the Internet and UPS phone operators. It can take 12-24 hours for that information to become available to the main UPS computer.
