Can't wait for the big day! (no cahnce of sleep tonight!!! )
Last year it was easier,. I owned less so I just packed it all!
I want to go as light as I can,
Obviously 500mm goes along,
Obviously 100-400mm goes along.
At the wide end I want one for scenics.. I ruled out the most versatile,. the 24-70mm 'cause it's huge!
So either 17-40mm or 28mm prime (tiny) I'm thinking 17-40mm (allready in bag)
Then there's the 70-200mm IS.. last year it got some of my best pics cuase it was light and easy to work with, but it was also on my 10D whcih I was familiar with,. (the 1D was brand new) AND most importantly,. I did not have the 100-400mm... so it was my only zoom option.
I'm thinking with 100-400mm I can leave the 70-200mm home.. I'll miss it's speed (both aperture and AF tracking) but I won't need to use a TC with the 100-400mm
Hmmm...
The other odd thought,. since 200mm was so handy (or 200mm and 1.4TC) last year..
what about dusting off the Holy Grail © aka 200mm f/1.8L ??
Not the easiest lens to work with .. passes up the portability of the zoom,.
But Oh my what great Pics I could get with it ....
But it's sooo damn heavy..
That's it,. I guess,. I've crossed off everything leaving me with this one question.. do I pack a fast 200mm and if so which one. Zoom or Prime. I just think if I pack that prime it will stay in the trunk.
See you guys tomorrow afternoon!

CGS,
I'm going light, or as light as I can.
400 f/5.6
300 f/3
100-400
70-200 f/2.8
24-70 f/2.8
1.4 TC
Flash + Wimberley flash bracket
Tripod
Laptop
External 80 GB drive
Everything sort of fits in the Computrekker AW Plus, including the laptop.
Bringing along a Domke shoulder bag just in case.
There will be a fair collection of Canon gear in Maine this weekend:):)
P.S. Don't forget your vest!
*edit* Bring the fast prime. Might be handy for the evening shoot!

Heck, I'm bringing all of my lenses (not that I have many to begin with, mind you) and two backpacks. Whatever I don't use can stay in the bigger backpack and in the car. The rest will go into my smaller backpack which is what I'll be using in the field. The last thing I want to be saying up there is, "Heck, I should have brought such-n-such lens along with me. Darn!". :D

I'm going light, too.
100-400
400 Prime
17-40
28-135 (For the boat, the IS should be handy)
20D
10D (backup)
Polarizer
1.4 TC
Tubes for the small shorebirds at Reid
Then again, this will take part of 2 bags, so I might just fill them...

GMOS = Great Maine Osprey Shooot
or
Maine Osprey Bird Shoot (MOBS)
Hey you guys, If Ian starts talking to the birds, at least one of you might want a macro lens with you. He likes to work close.
I'm insanely jealous. I know I was invited, but I really wish you guys would come up with something just a little closer to home.

I leaving the 400 DO behind ( I think I got it covered with the 300 an the 500) along with the 85 1.2 and 135 2.0. Everything else is coming. Do you see the need for these last two??
Can hardly wait....http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gifhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

Well I packed everything needed, with spare camera and some double-coverage, into one bag plus the photo vest. That's not too bad. And that includes SPF 45, SPF 30, 27% DEET and 100% DEET.
I even have spare dish towels for CDS. :-)

Well, I really would have pushed the invitation, but the governor of Maine called and said something about "5 is enough" and "keep the rest at home." What could I do?
Then again, I've got a Crown Vic... Belmondo would have no problem hiding in the trunk, and once over the border we'd be safe....

Tom, they are up at your old stomping grounds in LG.
I had an osprey soaring over me and picking up the occasional fish from the percolation ponds.

Actually, I'm going to be up in the Bay Area starting tomorrow. I'm not sure how long we'll be there, but probably no more than 2-3 days. I'm bringing some of my gear with me. I'm always hopeful.......
As for the POTN crowd that's going to Maine this weekend, I don't want to get too far away from the TV this weekend because I'm fully expecting them to do something that will make the news and disgrace us all.

:lol:O.K.
So, for those of us here on the West coast, California spefically, maybe we could put together a "Great Smog Shoot" or, seeing as it's June, the "Great June Gloom Shoot."
Or just get together and go to the Zoo...San Diego, Los Angeles, the Wild Animal Park. So fine, it's not a state issued invitation. And it's right in the middle of cities. But hey, it would be fun.
(can anyone tell I'm a tad jealous? ;) Of course, I'm still so new at photography, I wouldn't quite know what to do anyway, but I'd love to get away and go on a photo journey too. Sigh...)

I'd certainly be interested in something like that. Why don't you throw the idea out in a new thread in 'General Chat' and see what comes of it. I'd suggest the desert, but not for another 4-5 months.

Oh yee of such little faith. We are such a straight laced crowd I'm surprised you would even think of that.
Of course Kenny might always lead one of our group astrayhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gifhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif

Anchovies? SWEET! I love anchovies. They are so cute and cuddly. Not a great smoocher like and elk, but close enough.:):)
Oh man, it is way too early in the morning. I need coffee.
Maine, here we come!

Just got back in the door from an absolute amazing weekend. Now transferring the some 1800 images from the laptop to the desktop. Processing starts tomorrow as I am too darned tired tonight.
The weather was awesome. Most of us acquired a sunburn of sorts.
Might have had time to do some tonight if Ian the infamous navigator had not got us lost (or momentarily displayed according to him) leaving Maine.http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_cool.gifhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif

Oh yeah! It was amazing! Great company, excellent food (anyone got a lobster roll and a couple of pounds of fried mushrooms and a side of jumbo shrimp?)
Osprey, Bald Eagles, Eider Ducks, seals, cormorants, geese, Justabirds, and other FFF.
Lots of laughs, lots of coffee, lots of food and lots of fun! Images to follow. Thanks guys!

I was able to recover the "lost" images from the CF card.. still no explanation on why the X-drive died..
Still downloading the rest.. but it looks like it was a bountifull expidition for pictures... and well,. it was simply a BLAST for everything else!
Tons of fun, food and more fun. (and lots lots more food!)
It'll be a while before I process anything... but there were shots of the Os[prey in action I got this time that I had only dreamed of in the past! I am VERY excited! :) :)
So,. off to put more aloe and lidocaine, hydrocortizone, and after bite on all of my bites, poison Ivy, and sunburn....
Thanks Guys,. this was alomst too much fun in such a quick weekend,. and especially Scott,. thanks for organizing this trip!
the Boat tour was really amazing! (I could spend a week in that Rookery!)

Yes, an amazing weekend. GMOS I was a resounding success, due in no small part to the company! (and lobster rolls, and all the furred, feathered, and finned friends).
I can't wait for GMOS II...

I was wondering where you guys where going when you took that exit to 95N. I thought maybe that was the way you came the first time. Maybe I should have let the way for your guys, huh? But then, the way how my GPS has been acting up when finding the way to the lodge and then again to the Josephine Newman Wildlife Santuary, maybe you wouldn't have been any better off.
