i think i'm pretty happy with these.

i think the expression could use some help, but he's my boy so i love the
pictures anyway, but mostly looking at practicing with the natural light.

I like natural light the best, too. But maybe that's because all I have for light is the built-in flash on my camera. You pictures turned out great. So if you can get that kind of light all the time, go for it! :)

thanks you guys!

as far as technique, for these pictures...
i stuck bubba on the chair... smack dab in front of the open door and starting shooting.
*while learning, crossing fingers and hoping you catch a great shot helps too!;)*

i like the first shot... the reflection in the eyes really brings more to the picture.

Lighting is great! On the first one; a little unsharp mask work would be nice.

Ask him to look a little to the left ;) With babies you just have to choose your moment, and I love natural light. The 1st's great, the 2nd is ok, bit of an unusual expression.

I'm with MCB. Nothing beats natural light (in my inexperienced opinion).

The photographs are precious. I love existing light. I detest a flash and have refused to buy one. I pray that all of the money I am spending on lenses for my 20D will make up for no flash.

By the way, assuming that this is your child I like the second one because you can see his mommy in his eyes!

Sorry to say it mate, but IMHO sometimes a flash is essential if you want to get a photo of something that won't happen again. Fill flash is also useful. If I had to choose between giving up one of my lenses and giving up my 550EX, i'd give up a lens.

Then again some great photographers have worked with a single lens and no flash for their entire lives, and make great photos. I got a book from the library of a guy who'd taken photos of many, many famous photos using no flash, all black and white. His tricks were to use stairwells, and to carry a 200W bulb in his pocket for times where there really wasn't enough light around.

I have seriously considered the lightbulb thing!

A single strong source of light, perhaps with a slight fill light, can give wonderful pictures. Check out this site, i saw a presentation she gave and she has some great photos, not a flash in sight.
