A friend of mine asked for 10 photos to use on his real-estate website for promoting the city and area. He want's me to be fair and charge enough for my time and effort, so, where do I start? What would you, or do you charge for let say 10 great landscape photos?

My thought process would be something like this:

How much is my time worth (i usually think about $60 per hour) then think about how long it will take you to get all the shots. You also have to consider who will own the photos after all is done. In Canada, if he pays you to take them he owns the pictures, so you will not be able to make any more money off them if my understanding of the law is correct.

The photos are already taken, he wants to purchase the ones I've already done. I guess I could the reverse of that, think of how long they took to take and edit.

What you need to do is sell him a license to use the photo...and then that involves knowing what a license is/does/how to price them

www.fotoquote.com
buy this

and read up on photo licensing here:

Thank you, that was the second part of my question :) What about the actual charge for the photo? How do I come up with a fair cost?

Not sure about fotoquote, but the second one is American. There may be differences in Canada, though I am not certain.

READ WHAT YOU REPLIED TO. :) Photoquote helps you come up with a fair cost.

Honestly, you may as well just pull some number you're happy with out of your butt; your friend sounds like someone who would choke if you charged him Photoquote rates for web use.

You might try going to Gettyimages.com and looking at their RM web use prices (http://www.gettyimages.com/creative/frontdoor/WebAndMobileImages?isource=usa_home_media_spotligh t_webAndMobileImages). That's probably the bottom barrel price you ought to charge for web use.

Just trying to get an idea what everyone charges for photos. I could just make a number but I'm trying to compare.

It's really not possible to give you a number. The price depends on useage; i.e., website size, duration, size of photo on page, whether the page is the homepage or an inside page, etc etc etc. And then it comes down to negotiation. There is no one magical number.

Basically the image is worth whatever price your client is willing to pay that you're willing to accept.

If you want an idea of common prices, go to Photoshelter.com, find a photographer who licenses things, click "buy or download", plug in a web usage and look at the prices. You're probably looking at around $3,000 to $5,000 for 10 photos but, again, it varies based on usage. However, your friend likely has no idea what images are really worth (and maybe you don't value your images that much) and will probably poop a brick if you give him a figure like that.

This makes good sense, like you said, I don't want to scare him away but also don't want to devalue my pictures. Tough choices to make I guess! Thanks for the advice.

You're helping him make money so I'd also factor in how much he stands to make through your efforts.

Everything you guys are saying is sinking in. I don't want to devalue my photos or my time spent either. If I give you the details can you help calculate an estimate?

Photos are for a real-estate website, traffic is resereved to mainly clients of his. 300-500 page views daily tops.

Photos will be displayed on the front banner, 300x600 size (est) and will rotate with all of my picutres. He is planning on havingthr banner display on all his pages, not just home page.

He is looking for a set now, 5-10 and also will continue to buy more in the future as I have them.

The photos are some of my best work, I took them for pleasure so I can't specify the exact time I took on these, it may have been excessive as I was playing around too. If I had to say, maybe 1-2 hours of shootig time and another 1-2 for post process.

I'm not looking for you to give me a price, just assist in calculating the estimate of what you think value is.
