Lens shortlist, Opinions please

Hi,
I think this has probably been asked a million times before, so here's one more time :)

I'll be buying the 350D. Currently I have the film-based 300v with 28-90mm kit lens.

I've shortlisted a couple lenses I'd like to get with approximate street prices in my country:

EF-S 10-22 USD 640
EF 17-40 f/4L USD 660
EF 50/1.8 USD 80
EF 70-200 f/4L USD 740
EF 100/2.8 Macro USD 530

Based on these prices, which ones would be the ones I should get first? I'm split between the 10-22 and 17-40, as the 17-40 can be used on both film and digital(and future cameras with crop factors less than 1.6), and the prices are the same, but 10-22 will give super WA on the digital and it's lighter. What other lenses out there would be good? Should I get the 18-55 kit lens? Comments and opinions are appreciated. Thanks!

kit lens and 70-200 f/4 to start with...i have those two and a 50mm 1.8 and a 28-105 promaster and i am happy...my next purchase will be a wide though

Unless you shoot wide angle a lot, I would get the kit lens and 70-200 f/4. The kit lens is a bargain for the price and the 70-400 give you a longer range. Should you need a longer range, add a 1.4x TC. The next on line would then be either the 100mm macro or 10-22mm depending on your need. If you have the budget, get them all. Good luck!

like you - I still have a film body I use - so EF-S for me is a no go. I would do the three middle lenses in what ever order you like. Like said above, without knowing what you like to shoot, it is hard to give advice. Cheers.

uuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh no clue what you shoot, or what your budget is. Sooooooo can't help you yet. I'd highly recommend the 70-200 f/4L though. Amazing lens! I absolutely love it. It's especially spectacular if you want to shoot sports.

Anyway, as for the 10-22 and 17-40L question, I had the same problem a few days ago. Haha, Rent posted the thread I started I think. :-) So check that thread out, the people were very helpful! In the end, I decided to go with the 17-40mm because it seemed more practical. It's right in the middle between super super wide angle, and walk around lens. The 10-22 seems more like a specialty lens.... it's WICKED wide! I tested the two lenses out in a store and the 10-22 blew me away. I thought it was too wide though, and I didn't like it's non-fixed apeture (f/3.5-4.5). I'd suggest you get your hands on both lenses before you make your decision. Guess that's all for now....

A lot of these prices are high if you're in the US, especially for gently used stuff. I just sold my 70-200L for $510 and it was like new. I just bought a 17-40 f/4L for less than $600. I also picked up a canon 100 macro for $385 shipped, with hood. If these are CDN prices, then right on...

I would get the 50 for sure, then maybe 70-200 or a nice walk-around like the tamron 28-75 XR, or Canon 24-70L (or whatever it is...). Get the kit for sure, since it's almost free and nice for wide angle (17-55) until you can upgrade. Also, get a rocket blower... my favorite piece of equipment. Eventually you won't be able to resist the long lenses... it's a disease.

I am a Canon snob, but I have recently been enlightened by some sweet Sigma and Tamron offerings... don't restrict yourself to only canon. :cool:

The prices I've got are for brand new lenses in Malaysia. Except for the 100mm Macro, which is an import set. I'm currently in the UK, and used lenses sell even higher than that on ebay! Especially the L ones.

I'll be doing more people, street, scenery and night photography. So I was looking into WA. And my price for the 70-200 is rather expensive, so I'm thinking of making a trip to US one day to get one. I'll bear all your comments in mind when buying. Thanks again!

For night photography you'll need either a tripod of a fast lens, like the 50mm F1.8. Except I don't like the 50mm F1.8, it doesn't focus very well in my experience.
