It's one of those street grates that drain off rainwater. The splotches are flattened gum. The colorful ones are fresh (if you can call it that) while the dark ones seem ancient.

Very interesting shot. How often I walk around the city and neglect to pay attention to small details.........

Are the colored spots on it gum, or some kind of coating with various colors in it?

Thanks for the comments, folks. It's really amazing how you can find patterns or interesting pictures in even the most mundane of objects. The spots are indeed gum - when you look closely they are raised, like bas relief. The different colors depend I guess on the brand and/or flavor. So the green would be Apple flavor, the red may be Cinammon (Big Red), the white can be any of a dozen mint flavored brands, etc. I'd have to run a taste test to be sure. :)

Thanks, though I think anyone can take a shot like this. All you need to do is to take lots of pics of anything, that's what I do. :)
