Got my Newton Di100FRs the other day. Took me a while to figure out how to put it all together. All I can say is that I wish the instructions were numbered and spaced out for easier reading and comprehension, and the photos a little larger and easier to see. For the price you pay, you figure they could provide you with a nice manual, rather than little cutouts for each accessory from a deskjet printer.
Anyway, one thing the instructions failed to mention is how to actually use the rotating feature. It took me a while but I eventually figured it out. Because the pivot points were hard to move at first, I was afraid to separate the plates to rotate it because I thought I may bend or break the bracket. After moving it back and forth a few times it loosened up a little, but it still doesn't move as freely as I would like. The instructions mention something about a 3-in-one oil. Does anyone have specifics on what to use, how much to use, and where to apply it?
As far as using the camera with the bracket, I have to say it feels very different from my Quick Flip. The whole camera feels heavier to me because I no longer have a handle on the left side. Even though the Quick Flip bracket is probably heavier, using the Newton make the whole setup feel heavier because the balance is different. The flash is directly over the barrel of the lens rather than sitting on top of the body with the Quick Flip. There is more pressure on the hands to keep the body where you want it. I only have a 430EX, I can't imaging how heavy it would feel with a larger flash.
I suppose it will take some getting used to but until I do, I'll keep the Quick Flip close at hand.
