Please dont flame and shoot me down but the new nikon is making me wonder about my choice to go with Canon.
I know ,I know alot of you are going "oh my God here we go again! etc..."
I love my 20D and I am completely satisfied with my Canon.
I bought it 2months ago because at the time the 20D was the most competitive, high quality, best spec camera at the time and it blew the D70 out the water. So I went with Canon and have been glad I did since then.I also have "L" fever and love the build, quality ect of the L glasses.
I know that its the photographer and not the camera and stuff like that but what really is the main advantage from choosing a Canon over a Nikon?
I guess what I'm asking really is ,what makes a person a die-hard Canon fan?
I know if I switch brands just becase a rival has a new camera with better specs I'll be insane but I think if the D2X came out when I was comparison shopping I would have picked Nikon.Maybe....
What I'm really saying I guess is hehe ,Im kinda jeolous of the new Nikon D2X and wish Canon would come out with something quick to knock the D2X's socks off!!!
Thanks for listening to me ramble!

Look, dump your Canon equipment and go buy Nikon or Minolta or Sony or anything else for that matter. But after you do, don't come back here complaining and looking for help.

Listen Mr.RobertwGross/Cream of the crop,
I think a response like that is totally inapropriate.
I did not appreciate the tone you took in you post.
WHO ARE YOU TO TALK TO ME LIKE THAT????
WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE????
YOU MIGHT BE CREAM OF THE CROP HERE IN THIS FORUM AND HAVE 6000 POSTS BUT IT MEANS NOTHING TO ME IF IT COMES WITH A CONDENSCENDING,ARROGANT AND UNPROFESIONAL APROACH.
Yes I am new to the hobby and didnt know much about the differences of Nikon or Canon and was merely looking for a little info on the both of them.
We are talking about camera brands here and photography, not politics, race or creed so lay off the attitude and watch your tone.I dont give two flyings who or what you are!

Ease off on the coffee! You really need to get a grip.

20D - ~$1,300
D2X - $5,000

There's a big price difference, though. D:

its posts like from Mr.RobertwGross/Cream of the crop,
that really do my head in, he asked a straight forward question.. shame on you..

If you are going to compare the D2X to any Canon camera, you compare it to the 1DMkII.

Ooh and by the way, all of the Sports Illustrated Photographers use the 1DMkII.

Canon Does have 2 model that will put the D2x to shame and it came out before it.

1DMKII
1DsMKII

If you checking for spec the 1DsMKII is a 12+MP Full Frame
If you're looking for fast 1DMKII is 8fps 1.3 Crop factor
If you're looking for Brand recognition then just turn on any sports event and look for those pretty white lenses they are Canons.
If you're looking for in house technology look at Canon. Nikon don't make CMOS sensors they buy it.
If you're looking for full support out of the box, Canon supplies their camera with a full RAW processing SW. With Nikon they want another $99.

But with all honesty you're comparing a $5000 camera to a $1500 camera.
To be fair you need to compare D2x with the 1DMKII

Actually, it was not a straight forward question. It was just a ramble. He said so himself. Read it again.

At the last time I checked, this is a Canon group, not a Nikon or Sony. We are biased, admittedly.

I think we should all laugh a little more at ourselves and each other. I for one, did not take RG's inital response in the same manner that Kelv2888 did. I think Robert Gross is right, Kelv2888 despertly needs decaf. After 70 posts and reading many I am sure Kelv2888 has seen a post or two from Robert Gross that could have benefited greatly from a little smilely at the end ;) and might take what Mr. Gross says with a pinch of salt. I found it funny and found no real fighting words in the reply. But I have learned to read things in a flat emotionless manner as it is almost impossible to understand inference with out sound from a typed format.

Thank you Maureen.
I didnt really expect a reply like that.
I'm new to the hobby and I'm 100% satisfied with my Canon equip.
Matter of fact, I'm getting a 24-70 F2.8 L next week in addition to my 17-40 and 70-200 F4L.
I AM also biased because I DID invest in Canon.
I was merely in a indirect way asking you guys here WHY Canon was your choice and what you all thought about the D2X compared to the Canon models.
I will be more to the point as to avoid a misunderstanding that would induce a person to make a cynical, sarcastic and condescending reply here.

Why respond to a genuine question in this way?

The Nikon D2X is a professional dSLR camera and should be compared with it's Canon equivalent, not a consumer/prosumer body like the 20D.

Canon's competitor to the D2X is the 1Ds Mark II. Nikon's competitor (both in terms of market position and price) to the 20D is the D100... I know which one I'd rather own...

Kelv2888

Is technology of the sensor of the Nikon more advanced than the one on the 1Ds Mark II ? How are they different?
Does Canon have a 'better' sensor in the works?

You have to admit though, the Nikons are drop dead gorgeous to look at, and Canon must still be trying hard to live up o the name that was on every Fleetstreet photographers lips.

it was a fair question kelv2888,
i went with the 1dmk2 i did think about the N...n but have to many canon lenses so change would have lost me to much cash, im happy with the 1dmk2 and they are quite cheap too .

It takes a while for Bob to grow on you. You know, like mold. ;) Cream of the Crop is really our code for Head Curmudgeon. It's an art.

To answer your question, Nikon makes tanks that have blazing fast AF. I believe the F5 is the best film 35mm camera there is. That said, Nikon still hasn't figured out how to do digital color right. That's why my last film camera was an F5 and my digitals are Canon. Canon also has a better array of professional lenses. Nikon customer service has a horrible reputation. Canon Customer Service has been very responsive.

I don't RobertWGross' reply was out of line -- it sure sounded like Kelv2888 was whining about having made the wrong choice.

I'm glad that people pointed out the error in logic in comparing the new Nikon to the 20D -- they are in two different leagues, witness their huge price difference. When compared against comparable Canon models, the new Nikon doesn't seem like such a superior camera anymore.

Now if Kelv2888 was complaining that if he had known about the IdsMkII when he bought the 20D he maybe would have gone with that camera, how would we all have reacted?

To the best of my research, Nikon still doesn't have a camera comparable to the 20D in the same price range.

You'll have to excuse Bob Gross - he regularly shows his impatience with people on this forum. His reply was uncalled for - I agree.

As has been mentioned, however, you really need to make sure that when comparing models you are doing an apples to apples comparison. Top of the line to top of the line. I think that you made the right choice a while back witht the 20D - that is the top ameteur camera from Canon.

These types of XX vs. XX do nothing except make people's heads explode. The same thing would happen on a Nikon board. They serve no purpose than to create an argument.
