View Full Version : Error 99 with EF 50/1.8II- 350D

I just went out and bought a EF 50/1.8II thinking I'd have a fast prime to experiment with but it keeps giving error 99 on the 350D. When I first attached the lens it managed 3 shots @ 1.8, the minute I tried to close the aperture down and take another shot it spat error 99.
I've tried removing and replacing the CF, removing the lens and cleaning contacts on both it and the body, replaced battery with a freshly charged item. Removed lens again and tried the 18-55 which works error free.
'Apparently' the older lenses require more voltage or some jazz when closing down the aperture, causing failure and error 99. Does this sound correct?
I know it's a cheap lens but I was really looking forward to it :(

Sounds like couple of my old Sigma lens, only work at wild open in AV mode, anyhthing else is err99 and lock up. The nifty fifty works fine though.
Time for exchange?

Doesn't sound right to me. All EF lenses should work with your camera. Can you take it back?

Thanks for the quick replies. I agree that it 'should' work but definately doesn't. Like Lotto's experience with the Sigma's this one will only work wide open. I can take it back, but that'll be Monday now and I wanted it for the w'end....*sook*
Is anyone else using the 50/1.8 II with their 350D?

Where'd you buy it from? If it's local i'd go in and try another lens. If it's from a web store i'd call and ask their opinion - they'll most likely give you better advice than the people on this forum, they deal with faulty gear every day.

Bought it at Camera House Tim, don't know if you have them over there but it's a large chain type store. It was the only one they had in stock so either way I've got a wait on my hands.....thought it would be worth hearing the opinions of others who may have had experience with the same camera/lens combination.

We have camera house, but I don't buy lenses in NZ, they're too expensive. I'd still go back and talk to them, chain stores don't always have the most educated staff but you might be lucky and find someone who has a clue.
