I have a Canon 20D and a 18-55mm and want to buy another lens.
If you had only enough money to buy one good Canon zoom lens, what would you buy and why?

I would buy the 70-200 F2.8 IS, because it's worth a lot, I could sell it and buy what I really needed.

What do you take photos of? To me there's 4 main ranges of lenses, wide, normal, telephoto, and long telephoto, each has a different use and a different subject.

And if that is too expensive at $ 1600, the 600$ EF 70-200/4.0 is a worthy substitute (of course, without f/2.8 and IS)

Best regards,
Andy

Hahaha, I wont even get started on this one since I'd be dropping $4,000 or more on each lens if I was filthy rich and could afford it. :-)

To be more reasonable, if I had the cash I'd pick up a 100-400L lens. Simply because it's AMAZING! Great zoom range, sharp, and at $1,400 it's within the relm of reason.

Other than that, I'd pick up a 24-70mm f/2.8L because I crave a great walk around lens, and that's pretty much as good as it gets.

Once I get the cash my next purchase will probably be a EF-S 10-22mm lens because it's incredibly wide, and just amazing.

Haha, anyway, I think you should let us know your budget, and what you intend on shooting with your new lens so we can better help you. Your question as it stands is just far to broad.

Fifth range: lifesize (or better) macro

That would certanly help. I am a zoomer so I love my 70-200L IS 2.8. It is good for most of what I do. The 2.8 is important to me because I prefer to shoot existing light and shoot mostly in late afternoon to early evening. However, I also shoot sports so it is not enough for the more distant shots which is why I am eagerly awaiting this mornings delivery of a Sigma 120-300 2.8 and 1.4 extender! When budget is an issue.......CHARGE!

Since I already have the 70-200 f/2.8L IS, my next would be the 16-35 f/2.8L. But then it always depends upon what you are trying to achieve in your photography, which will determine what lens you need(or how big a hole in your wallet you'll have).

Definitely the 70-200F2.8L IS USM

I can't belive the number of recommendations that are being given without knowledge of what freddie takes photos of. Without that information i'd honestly ignore every recommendation given so far, including my own, which was given as a joke.

He didn't ask for recommendations, he asked what WE'D buy, LOL. Although I don't understand how you can only have enough money for one lens. Unless it is the cheapest lens, in which case the decision is already made for you. If you have enough money for the most expensive zoom, then you certainly have enough for several cheaper zooms.
